what is anti-theft light doing? It should come on solid for about 2 sec after you turn the key on then turn off. If it is flashing after this then it is not seeing the computer chip in the key and you have a PATS problem.

In some 1999/2000 Cougars the wire between the battery and the voltage regulator(altenator) had a resistance reading that is too high. Ford has issued an TSB 00-25-6 that has instructions on how to replace this wire. The part # for the replacement wire is
1S8Z-14A411-AA. I'm in Michigan and a local dealer found one for me in South Bend,IN

AC compressor clutch has gone bad

It appears my AC compressor clutch has gone out based off of information given to me. I don't not have the money to take it to a shop and have it fixed but i have decided to buy a bypass pulley, was told this was my only solution cause if i bought a short belt ''something'' would turn backwards, instead of replacing the whole AC compressor. Removing the belts is not an issue for me but i honestly do not know how to remove and install the bypass pulley. Was hoping to get a head start on it before the part got here so i can prep my car in my garage. Any and all help is appreciated. And no, as you can probably tell I am not a car guy.

ok well sounds to me like your gonna have to remove the ac comp. itself which will take a little work... the new pully will prolly be a bracket that bolts up were the ac comp is now but it will be free spinning i have not done this specfic one but thats like one i did once you will have to empty the ac system of all refrig which to be done properly you must have a recovery machine {which means shop which means money im sorry} then remove the lines and un bolt comp. when all said and done you will notice better gas milage so thats a plus i hope this was helpfull and once again this is how i did it to my old blazer i used to have so i hope that its the same for you best of luck man

sounds like your brake/shift interlock solenoid is not releasing.
Your owner manual will tell you how to bypass in emergency.
Check your fuse first. fuse panel on instrument panel.

Please rate as fixed if this helps.

Fuse 23 - 1 5 amp
Fuse 34 - 7 1/2 amp

check enigne light not related.

The selector lever lock can be moved mechanically out of position ”P" when for example the battery is disconnected or completely discharged.
Using a ball point pen or similar item as an unlocking lever, push forward and hold in position.

Move the selector lever out of position "P".

NOTE: If the selector lever is moved back to ”P" it is re-locked.

2000 Mercury Cougar Power door locks do not work on either door

My Power door locks do not work on either door in my 2000 Mercury Cougar that I just bought yesterday. I have to manually lock or unlock the doors with the key from the outside every time. I am assuming it is a fuse but can not find the fuse location from the diagram. Please help somebody. Thank you so much.... Elena

Power door locks are on the same fuse as the alarm system. The fuse is located in the passenger compartment fuse panel under the steering wheel. There is a pull down lever that will release the fuse box. The fuse for the alarm system/locking system is #25. Yellow color and a 20 ampere rating.

P0401 code Mercury Cougar 2000. DPFE sensor?

Hi,

My 2000 Mercury Cougar has been showing the CEL for a while now. The guys at Autozone said the code was P0401 - Insufficient EGR circulation. I took the car in for an estimate and the mechanic told me the DPFE/EGR pressure sensor was faulty and needed to be replaced. Since I wanted to learn more about fixing my car myself, I looked the DIY for DPFE replacement online. I switched my DPFE sensor (part# F7ue-9j460-AA) with BWD EGR155 from Advance auto parts. However, 10 miles after resetting the codes (by disconnecting battery), the CEL was on again. What could be the problem? Should I replace the EGR valve or solenoid? What diagnosis can I do to figure out whats faulty? The only other symptom is slightly lower gas mileage, but since I drive in Boston traffic I cant say for sure if the EGR is causing that.

I would really appreciate your help.

Thanks!

  1. Have tried cleaning out the throttle body? Carb cleaner and a rag should do the trick. Also, try bypassing the vacuum solenoid. First, remove the vacuum line from the solenoid, start the car, and then connect the vacuum line directly to the EGR valve. The car should run very rough and die. If not, then there is still something blocking the system (since you replaced everything, it might be down in the pipe (between valve and exhaust)). Also, ensure that the vacuum is strong enough by ensuring that the lines sticks to your fingers. Final possibility is that your new sensor is bad. You can do a voltage check (with igntion turned toon: 1 wire at 5 volts, 1 wire at 0 volts and 1 wire at about .5 tp 1.1 volts). The aftermarket sensors are not always of the best quality.

Enter this Pinpoint Test only when directed here.

The use of a soap solution, such as SNOOP, around the fuel filler cap or the use of the hydrocarbon emission analyzer to determine an evaporative emission system leak is not recommended. The mandatory Rotunda Evaporative Emission System Leak Tester for OBD II (including the ultra-sonic tester) is the only device to be used at this time for evaporative emission system leak detection.

Hi,welcome to fixya.

The rear wheel bearings are not adjustable. If the bearings make noise or become loose, they must be replaced.

Removal & Installation

With Drum Brakes

NOTE The wheel bearings are contained within the wheel hub and must be replaced as an assembly.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  4. Remove the anti-lock sensor retaining bolt and remove the sensor.
  5. Remove the brake drum retainer and the brake drum.
  6. Remove the hub retaining nut dust cover.
NOTE Do not use an impact gun to remove the hub retainer nut.

To install:
  1. Reinstall the hub and bearing assembly to the spindle.
  2. Reinstall the hub retainer nut. Tighten the retainer nut to 170-192 ft. lbs. (230-260 Nm).
WARNING Do not use an impact gun to tighten the hub retainer nut, otherwise the bearings may be damaged.
  3. Install the hub retaining nut dust cover.
  4. Reinstall the brake drum.
  5. Check the brake shoes for proper adjustment.
  6. Reinstall the anti-lock sensor and the retaining bolt. Tighten the retaining bolt to 7-8 ft. lbs. (9-11 Nm).
  7. Reinstall the wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the wheel nuts to 62 ft. lbs. (85 Nm).
  8. Lower the vehicle until the wheels are supporting the vehicles weight. This will properly load the suspension.
  9. Tighten the spindle-to-control arm bolt to 52-79 ft. lbs. (70-98 Nm).
  10. Tighten the tie rod-to-spindle bolt to 75-102 ft. lbs. (102-135 Nm).
  11. Finish lowering the vehicle.
Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation.

First off I am sorry you have a cougar also.... I am on my third fuel pump ... stupid car anyways. If you didn't do it yet one make sure you get one from the dealer... Hopefully you will have better luck than me i paid 400 last year and tried to get one on warrenty then I had to wait since may to august to get it good news for you Ford should have it off back order. It is in the fuel pump you can 1. drop the tank (huge pain) or 2. it is WAY easier to take out your back seat ther eis a small hole to see the pump covered by a black plastic thing. You can then make the hole bigger and pull the pump out that way.
