The likely problem is the VSS or vehicle speed sensor. The transmission uses the speed from the speed sensor to determine the shift points. You should have the check engine light on it will probably show a code for the speed sensor. Hope this helps!

there is a tailight fuse that may be burnt out.if its okay then you may have bulbs that need replacing.check for power at the sockets and check for grounds for the sockets to make sure they are working.if you have no ground then you can supply a good ground to see if it fixes the problem,if so then find the ground wire that supplies the tailights and check it to find were the problem is and fix the problem.the same with the power wire for the tailights which should be a brown colored wire,

Don't know specifically what Mercury you have, but typically the water pump is dead center on the front of the motor. If it has an engine driven fan then that would attach to the front of the water pump.

You can reuse it. But you need to find out why it was thrown off. Check all the pullies by grabbing them and checking for side to side movement, With the exception of the power steering pump pulley (which has some in and out play) they all should have no play. To change the filter it is located on the bottom of the transmission under the transmission pan. It looks kind of like the oil pan but of course on the transmission. Once you remove the pan, you will have to unbolt the transmission filter, from there you can replace. Make sure to drain the fluid first or you are going to make a huge mess. If your transmission dues not have a drain plug, then remove the fill bolt, and evacuated the fluid that way.

Have some one bang on the starter while you crank, if the battery and terminals are fine then it has to be bad starter.

In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling

The fuse box that the fuse for your interior lights is located inside the vehicle to the left of the steering wheel under the instrument panel. Below I gave you a picture of its location as well as some basic instructions on how to open it up to expose the fuse panel. Also below is a picture of how the fuses are arranged by numbers. The fuse that you want to pull out until you are able to make the repair to correct the problem is the number 34 fuse and should be a 7.5 amp fuse. This all should be in your owners manual if you have one.
