This code means that you have a problem with purge flow. This is a relatively difficult problem to diagnose and you should know that this type of problem can be challenging even for professionals with proper diagnostic tools.

You know how a container of liquid can inflate itself if left in the sun? (like one of those plastic gas cans)
Well the gas tank on your car would do the same thing if it wasn't vented. But the good ol' EPA doesn't want you venting gasoline fumes into the atmosphere so the vented fumes are filtered through a charcoal canister first. The gasoline molecules are trapped in the charcoal canister. While you are driving the vehicle at cruising speed, the purge valve is opened (by the car's computer) and allows your engine to suck in the fumes from the charcoal canister and burn them. That last bit is Purge Flow.

Check your vacuum hoses and the hoses coming from the charcoal canister to the purge valve and from the purge valve to the intake. If it all looks solid, I'd suspect your purge valve is either stuck or broken mechanically. If it is stuck you might free it up by taking it off and cleaning it. There is a way to test it but involves electrical knowledge and skill and you may have to put your mouth on it. (I'm talking about blowing air into it wile jumping power and ground to it in a very small connector).

Check that your intake is not clogged with carbon buildup where the purge valve connects. Some intakes have very small passages for purge flow that become clogged easily.

In rare cases the charcoal canister gets clogged.

My advice to novices is if you don't see anything obviously clogged or leaking, then just replace the purge valve. If that doesn't do it, take it to a good mechanic with ASE Certified Technicians.

all other non engine electrics all working, and dash warning lamps all on key on????????
The ASD, fuel and starter relays, do what? you left that out.
ok battery is good. starter is good. the relay works
but who controls the relay, well that is a chain of things

the relay is not tested by jumpering 30 to 87
fuse 2 must be good
the relay good.
then (a voltmeter makes this childs play)
the relay coil is grounded on one side.
then the hot side goes to the clutch switch(m.t) or as the case may be, the A/T PRNDL switch.
my wild guess is car is A/T and if yes
page 8w-21-3 covers this
the key switch sends 12v to starter relay coil
and the PRNDL ground the starter relay coil at d13
ever wiggle the PRNDL by trying park or neutral to crank
the N contacts are virgin still and may allow cranking
if you 12vdc across the coil cranking the relay is BAD.
D11 to D13 (any voltmeter works)

the parts are shorted.
the fuse prevented the FIRE.

From my experience with my wife's 97 Wrangler look at the intake manifold for 2 vacuum lines. They will be just under the throttlebody One of them is broken or has come loose. We had this problem several times, idle high, running eratic, until I put a smaller rubber hose on the fitting. Has run good since.

Need to check spark and fuel start by picking up a tester for the wires it plugs in like a spark plug and has a light that will come on if you have spark the next disconnect the main fuel line to the fuel rail and turn the key to the on position if u get fuel out of it the the pump is good

Hello. Your engine might be burning transmission fluid when shifted into reverse. If bands were out of adjustment, it just wouldn't move...or very slowly.

Probably a bad wiring harness to the lights or a bad ground, but keep in mind jeep headlights are not known to be very bright at all.

A/T or M/T , 4wd or 2wd, mine are both 4wd and M/T , know well.

STOCK: 1997
the PCM measure speed via the VSS from the tranny and sends MPH
to the I/P cluster brain, (data comms) this brain then sends speed to you at the speedo meter needle (gage). (stock setup)

note the VSS sensor can be in 3 places. 2wd, 4wd and on 2 differ.
post car spec, and answers get easier
post photos of trans, better. (left and right side)

transmission type, and even mid year changes on transmissions can
change this.

so your car has no speedometer cable. and
on some early transmissions, you can add one, only getting the full
transmission facts on car (label) could you find this out.

if you remove the VSS, the ECU will go to limhome and never run right again, and 2 times that, if tranny is a Automatic, it shifts using the VSS data !
VSS means vehicle speed sensor.

so tell me , where would you use a cable, there is no cable port.
(look and see, is it missing, yes?)
so scratch mechanical.
is there other ways sure. lots. (no idea of application,.. me.)
Get a GPS speed meter (sold as a guage) stand alone gage.

or load Speedo (app) to any Android phone and Glue CEL to dash)

or pot a Tom Tom Nav on the dash and see it right there.
or you can buy a mag sensor and speedo setup, that fits
to the rear drive shaft that gives you speed, (after calibrating it)
(after market Vss sensor + 4wires + guage ) 1/2 mechanical.

btw , i do have this android app , used for true speed, my large tires
make my speedo in car lie, )
