1990 Jeep Wrangler - Page 4 - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
1990 Jeep Wrangler 2.5l idles rough/ black smoke/ fuel odor
You could pay a garage to diagnose the problem cheaper than throwing more parts at it.The problems may be connected or they may be different issues.Yes I would change the oil and filter, but first I would make sure the fuel system is not dumping too much fuel into the cylinders. The O2 sensor helps the computer decide on how much fuel the engine needs, along with the other sensors. And you said you have already replaced the O2 sensor.A mechanic would take a scanner and "read" the sensors and look for something out of normal range. The fuel pump and fuel filter are off the list as far as causing a rich mixture goes.I would start with the rich mixture and then see if fixing that issue takes care of the no start when hot issue.Change the oil and filter first, and see if the injector is on too much. You can watch the spray and tell - at idle it should be very light. Also look at the engine temp - is it warming up to normal 195 degrees? Can you tell if the fuel pressure regulator is blown and pouring fuel into the throttle body ?Without a scanner its going to be more difficult, but not impossible to diagnose.Let me know what you find out.

1990 jeep wrangler motor has no compression
Take it back to the shop that did the engine overhaul. No compression at all? They did something very wrong. Does the distributor shaft and rotor turn when cranking the engine? Are you sure your compression tester is working and hasn't failed? Is it possible they got the timing for the crank and camshaft all wrong? Take it back to them and demand they fix it, if it truly has no compression. It will never start without compression.

No spark
Test the coil, then ignition module, first I would check the fuses, and any relays that might have something to do with the problem.

Engine is very hard to start when cold chugs bad n wont idle once it warms up it seems fine but when i go to turn off engine it seems to want to stay running
I have seen many, many, and I mean many hard luck stories about jeeps. I own one and have recently fought through my own experiences. First, are you getting a check engine light or any DTC trouble codes. Like p9138 or p0351? 351 is the kicker. It could be the cps ( crank position sensor ) or the ecm / pcm ( computer brain ) or even possibly fuel pressure @ the fuel trim rail. check out www.cnet.com there are hundreds, if not thousands of stories from real people like us who have experienced everything from apparent haunted equipment to simple fuses. In most cases, it is the cps ( crank position sensor ) or the computer ( ecm / pcm ). Electronic control module / power control module , this is the same piece of equipment. just goes by either name. there is a master mechanic named Damian007 on that site and he can diagnose any jeep blindfolded. I recently had to back out 2 screws on my computer 1/4" each to get my jeep to even start again. Insane and incredible at the same time. Jeep runs like it is fresh off the assembly line with improved gas mileage and a smooth idle. He can definitely lead you on the right course of action without shelling out thousands to incompetent mechanics who have no clue as to why your jeep does what it does. That includes most jeep specialty mechanics.

Hi JT, The typical firing order for a straight six is
1-5-3-6-2-4. If this doesn't help let us know the specific engine your working on and we'll help you. Regards John

My 1990 jeep wrangler starts up and runns fine
Chk. E.G.R. valve make sure its got vacume and that its functioning, they do get carboned up and quit working that will make it bog down. Also if that is not an issue, i would chk. fuel pressure, just to make sure you got the right P.S. I. If none of that helps the only other thing i can think of is timming.

1992 Jeep Wrangler jerks and rpms jump like not getting gas
would need a drive and a play under the bonnet to be sure to be honest ,this sort of fault is more often than not electrical but what and where is the big question here .Now for starters i would look at the inlet manifold to make sure its not loose ,then i would check electrical connections to the coil as it could have either a hot/burnt connector or a corroded one then i would try ti check the cables into teh connection block itself in case one of the wires is broke or burnt .Then if they appear ok then i would do the same on the crank pick up sensor making sure it was clean with no magnetis swarth stuck to it and again ensure the connecting multi connector things were ok .It will not be a faulty fuel filter well thats the last thing i would check but the wiring connection on the pump/sender unit YES as the pump draws a lot of amps and the feed wire from the top of the sender unit down to the pump itself ,be surprised how these connection deteriorate and the amount where i have often wondered how the petrol tank never blew up ?? This sort of fault is just time consuming to locatre although the cure is often simple and inexpensive without the need for a fancy computer and a white coated rubber gloved so called technician to PLUG IN .Put your reading glasses on and take your time plenty of tea breaks to reflect and think puff of a ciggy and think again ,then if all else fails you need a big hammer and a condom hit it with the hammer and if that fails then use the other thing ,best of british with it anyway .

What would make a1990 jeep wrangler engine stop after getting hot
It maybe the fuel pump shut off when it get hot. Once it turns off have someone listen in the back to see if they can hear the pump come on. Also you can spray some carb cleaner inside the intake manifold when the car does not want to start. When you spray it try to start the car, if it starts right up you have a fuel pump problem. Otherwise check out your crank and cam position sensors as they tend to have the same symptoms.
Also, you will need to check out the crank position sensor, when the car turns off you can perform a spark test and see if you are getting good spark.
Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate
your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about
this answer.
Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.
