Just last night my windshield
check the fuse first. If it's ok, take a multi meter out to the wiper motor connector and ensure that there is power to the wiper motor. If you have power to the connector then you have a bad wiper motor.
Always have to add water but see no obvious leak?
Check to see if your engine is not overheating: this can cause the water to be lost via the overflow radiator container and radiator cap.
A badly out of tune engine or even the wrong octane fuel can cause overheating.
If the radiator water is milky and oily, then you possibly have a cracked gasket or cylinder head.
Hope the information is useful.
I'm having trouble locating the starter on my 1990
As you are facing the car, it is on your right hand side - low on the engine - toward the rear of the car. To remove, 1) remove the positive battery cable 2) jack the drivers side front of the car up 3) from above or below, remove all electrical connectors
Hi when I try to start the car it will try to
Hello, My name is Dan. I am not a mechanic. However, I've owned 2 of the same Volvo's. While I don't know right now where the temp sensor is located, I will share a previous experience (cheap repair) of mine. Sometimes, you can get a pin hole or other leak in the hose from the gas cap to the tank. This will cause the fuel smell & to loose pressure in the system. Also, anywhere else along the fuel system is susceptible to leakage. Check wherever there are clamps.

hi this sounds like the switch is u/s worn, there are two types of switch, in two different locations, there is a plunger type switch, it has a sprung loaded plunger into a small switch box, or the contact type switch, which as you move the stick it makes contact inside the switch, one is located under the vehicle on the transmission the other is connected to the gear leaver under the centre console, you will have to locate and replace, as by what you say it just has warn out and needs a new one, hope this helps
Have a 1994 volvo 740
This sounds like the neutral safty switch shorted out, you may have blown fuses but need to repair this in order to start the car, the shifter cover needs to be remove then you will see the switch bolted to side of shifter housing also check the wiring and make sure there are no wires melted together, i've done a few of these, a couple had the wiring going under the dash melted,i had to install new parts of the wire for customer, the dealer wanted to replace wiring harness for $2000.00,this can be bypassed but then you will have no rev lights and car will start in any gear and take off if brake is not applied so i would repair. heres a picture of switch to help you find it, hope this helps.

How to install timing belt
One way to do it, is to make a mark on the tooth wheels the timing belts is running over, and a correspondig mark on somewhere on the engine.
Another way is to turn the tooth wheels around, until the factory made position marks on the tooth wheels correspond with the factory made position marks on the engine (normally upper part).
What is important is that the tooth wheels are in exactly same postion when you put on the new timing belt, as when you removed the old timing belt.
It's also recommended to replace the unit used for tightening the timing belt at the same time.
This is only a short description of the most important things. For a more detailed describtion, one can get a repair manual from Haynes:

1990 volvo 740 speedometer quit working
There is a speed sensor on the rear diff cover that may me shot, however it is regulated by hertz so the dealer is the best place to see if the wires are okay. That sensor can be costly.

Volvo 240/740/760/780/940/960 1990-1998 - Starter
TESTING
The easiest way to test the
performance of the starter is to perform a voltage drop test.
The battery must be in good condition and fully charged prior to
performing this test.
-
Connect a voltmeter between the positive and negative terminals of
the battery.
-
Turn the ignition key to the
START
position and note the voltage drop on the meter.
-
If voltage drops below 11.5 volts, there is high resistance in the
starting system.
-
Check for proper connections at the battery and starter.
-
Check the resistance of the battery cables and replace as
necessary.
-
If all other components in the system are functional, the starter
may be faulty.
Many automotive parts stores have starter bench testers available for
use by customers. A starter bench test is the most definitive way to
determine the condition of your starter.REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
(see
Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4)
-
Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
-
Disconnect the leads from the starter motor.
-
Remove the starter motor retaining bolts.
-
Remove the starter motor from the vehicle.
To install:
-
Position the starter motor to the flywheel housing.
-
Apply locking compound to the bolt threads and install the
retaining bolts finger-tight.
-
Tighten the bolts to approximately 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
-
Connect the starter motor leads and the negative battery cable.

Battery gauge reads low sometimes; will not start
Hello. I realize that you have checked all the connections per your ingition system. To be frank with you, you've checked everything I would have checked. I believe you may have either a dead cell in your battery or a short in it. If I were you, I'd hook-up a relative/friends battery and see if that works before I bought one. Your charging system seems to be alright, and the battery is the only other link in that chain. Let me know, I'll think on it more just in case. Thanks for trusting fixya to help get you going!
How do i find TDC when set the timing marks on 1990 volvo 740gl
if you know the firing order of the engine and also the position of the no.1 cylinder you are off to a good start.
Remove the plug on the no.1 cylinder and turn the engine until the piston starts coming up on compression stroke, you can fing out if it is on compression stroke by placing your finger or thumb over the spark plug hole, you will feel the pressure under your thumb or finger as the piston starts to come up the bore.
when you can feel that pressure you can remove your thumb etc and stick a medium size screwdriver into the hole making sure you hold it from falling into the cylinder, rest the end of the driver on top of the piston and turn the engine slowly by hand only, (not by the starter) until the piston has come up to the top of the cylinder, now have a look at the harmonic balancer on the end of the crankshaft, there should be markings on it and one marking will have a "0" with TDC above it, line that mark up with the pointer and that will be top dead center
