are you sure the slection linkage is good , do get the rest of gare ----- does the tranmission have enough fliud ----- if that is good , then the tranmission is gone .

yes, its possible. and no im not licensed, but have done it myself. here's some pointers. do you have the time ? and tools ? and another vehicle to drive when you realise you should have just paid the 800 bucks.
your gonna have to raise the vehicle enuff to take the transmission out of the way, and then refill the fluids you loose. plus cleanup the mess you make.
autozone sells manuals that cover a few models between certain years, and it has step by step instructions to show you whats required.......spend the 19 dollars and read it. if you have what is required, i say go for it.
but if you do something wrong and it leaks, you have to do it all over again.
if a shop does it n it leaks, they have to repair it for free.

Smoke can be from rings worn out, cracked piston, valve guide seals if smokes at start up then stops, fueling issues if fuel is to rich but that smoke is usually black, also if head gasket is blown or head is cracked water burning turns into steam which looks like white smoke. This can also be why won't start just turns over.

Could be many things start by checking for fire, fuel, and compression the basics without these it cannot run.

sounds like you could have an intermittent problem with your crank position sensor. i had a 89 240 that did the same thing and i ended up having to replace the crank sensor

You will need to turn the ignition to the number 1 position and turn the radio on. It can take several hours, but the word code should come back on. When that happens, you will need to put the correct code in. If you don't have it, a Volvo dealer can give you the correct code from your VIN.

if the vin no may not be able to help, pull out the radio set and get the serial nos and together with it, get your local Volvo dealer to obtain the code. I did mine in Malaysia at no charge.

Your car actually has a timing belt that should be changed along with the tensioner at 70,000 Miles. In the past, I have found that the first question people ask is when was the timing belt replaced.

by the filler valves and a 1994 vehicle will have R134 also the rad in the front of the vehicle is full size

If its got an auto transmission,the fluid goes down the dipstick tube.Hope this helps

with the little research i've done including looking up the part. which only lists one being before the catyilitic converter (uptream) and the fact that your car being 1994 with obd I emission controls (obd II reqiures two - 1 upstream and 1 downsteam), i'm making an educated guess that it only has one O2 sensor

Well It has a bolt and a wood-ruff key holding it in place. I am sure you took the center bolt out,so with the pry bar on one side with mild pressure tap on the opposite side of the balancer with a small hammer. Remembering this is not a press fit.So by synchronizing the pressure with the tap it should move tiny bits at a time. It is kind of a "feel" thing. Not a "force " thing.
I actually wish I were there to help.This kind of removal is kind of tricky but it does work. Tiny movements at a time.

Did your car have brown head gasket?

something like O2 sensor will cause the check engine light stay on, not too worries,or you may take it to dealer did a service.(the light may stay on on that year model even after service.)
