How do i replace a 1987 mercury cougars starter and where is it located

Hi Devon, Disconnect the battery and then follow the heavy positive cable to the starter motor. Remove the securing nut which hols the same cable and the smaller cable to the solenoid. You may also find a thin cable which is an earth connection. Do not mix these two cables when reassembling. Remove the mounting bolts and once done remove the starter motor, fit in new unit and assemble in the opposite as disassembly. Regards John

1 person answered question but not 2 degree knowing exact anyone know where fuseable links are to a 1987 mer xR7 power seats. r there more than 1 mechanic said 1s near starter silenoid r ok thnx

Most common failure is switch or relay. Relay is under seat, I think. Trace current from existing link onward.

How to replace my brakelight switch on my 1987 mercury cougar?

The brake light switch is under the dashboard beside the lever from the brake pedal itself. It is difficult to get to (almost requires that you are either extremely patient or a contortionist) but removes and replaces easily with two bolts and a connector that you unplug from the old one and plug in to the new one. Look under the dash, follow the brake pedal lever upward, and you will see the switch.

How to replace brakelight switch on my 1987 mercury cougar?

on a car that old it's likely to be a wiring issue. You should check the relay as well but since the lights ground to the body of the car all you need to do is run a wire from each of the positive connections on the back of the light housing back to the relay. before doing that you might also check the switch on the brake pedal do see if that is faulty.

How do I replace the thermastat in a 1989 cougar ls

Looking around the web, I figure the thermostat is inline with the water pump, before the radiator. You'll have to drain the coolant out of the engine before you remove the water pump or anything associated with it. Maybe someone else who has done this will answer your question better than I can. Good
