Transmission model is AX4N.The reason that the car/trans only acts up after long drives is the heat.As metal components heat up,tolerances and clearances that were marginal or borderline before with moderate heat, become excessive clearances when really hot.More than likely there are internal transmission components with excessive wear. Many problematic areas inside the AX4N trans is the pump, where the oil pump driveshaft bearing wears out,the seal is torn, and hydraulic pressure falls off, common failure point in these units. The other areas are typical to all automatic transmissions, the clutch packs and bands wear and lose clearance.as well as some of the bushings inside the unit.I just rebuilt recently a trans exactly identical to your car,V8...4.6Ltr Lincoln, and it had minimal damage inside, but enough to throw the check engine light on with a Torque Convertor Clutch trouble code. The TCC was slipping excessively, and the vehicle computer recognized this, and illuminated the CEL.Chances are good that the damage inside your trans will be minimal, but now is the time to consider rebuilding it and restoring all the hydraulic circuits integrity, and resetting all the clutch pack and band clearances with new clutches, steels, and bands.A remanufactured torque convertor should also be installed along with rebuilding the trans.Be careful as to who does the work on the trans should you decide to rebuild it,as some people's definition of a rebuild doesn't quite qualify as anything more than a patch/repair job.A complete rebuild consists of tearing the trans completely down, loading it into a parts cleaner, and thoroughly cleaning it.From this point, the rebuild begins, including a banner overhaul kit,new steels, bands, seals, thrust washers as required,Electronic Pressure Control solenoid, all new bushings, set clutch pack clearances to factory specifications, along with setting unit endplay, and a remanufactured torque convertor.Good luck.

Lincoln Continental2000-Door key won't unlock door-but starts car

2000 Lincoln Continental door and trunk keys abruptly stopped working consistently. All keys (main – spare – valet) had been working fine and been used regularly since the keyless entry stopped working three years ago. Now some times they unlock the car or the trunk and sometimes not. I have to try several times to get them to work. All keys are not worn and will start the car easily. Remote fob does un-lock trunk and locks and un-locks driver’s door.

My power driver's seat 1999 lincoln continental keeps returning to the full back position even when i drive.I changed the entire seat frame with new motors and gears, $500.00 no fix. I have to pull the #39 fuse to stop the continuous relay noise even with the key off.The battery goes dead from the relay's constant clicking for reverse movement.Where is the bad sensor located? The door switch is ok and it even does this with the key out..

does this have automatic seat positioning when you open the door or hit the unlock button on your key fob?

here's how it works:

Seats — Programmable
The memory seat system allows automatic positioning of the driver seat to two programmable positions using the message center, the key fob or the keypad on the door.
Seats — Driver Seat Module
The Driver Seat Module (DSM) is located under the driver's seat and is attached to the seat frame. The DSM will:

  • control the movements of the driver's seat and power exterior rearview mirrors
  • store and recall seat and mirror positions of two personalized settings
  • receive all power seat and mirror control inputs from the Driver's Door Module (DDM) through the J1850 communication network
  • move the exterior rearview mirrors downward when the transmission is shifted into reverse, if enabled.
Seats — Driver Door Module
The driver's seat regulator control switch is connected to the Driver Door Module (DDM). The DDM receives the driver's seat regulator control switch input and communicates the direction of movement over the J1850 communication network.

  • Seat at limit(s) of travel.
  • Open fuse junction panel Fuses 39 (10A), 41 (20A), and 28 (10A).
  • Open power distribution box Fuse 13 (30A).
  • Loose, corroded or damaged connectors.
  • Damaged switches.
  • Damaged motors

Also, the dealer can run a scan on your seat modules with his tester and tell you what the codes are. They should only charge an hour to do this. Then you can decide what to do. Call your dealer and ask how much to run the scan test.

How can I fix a door adjar error on a 1999 Lincoln

How can I fix a door adjar error on a 1999 Lincoln Continental? When the drivers door is shut, the warning comes on and the dome lights remain on. I don't want to spend money to replace the sensor, but can I bypass it?

I suspect you have a bad door ajar switch on one of your doors.

The switch is on the door latch. try pushing each door in with your hand one at a time and see if the warning goes away.
The Lighting control module is $500 and controls a lot of the vehicle functions. It is part of the headlamp switch. It has to be configured by the dealer with his NGS tester before it will work. Ebay has them cheap sometimes. Only buy Continental LCM for your model year.

info
When at least one door is ajar and the key is in the RUN position, the door ajar cluster lamp is activated and remains on until all doors are closed. A warning tone will sound once any time the key is in the ignition switch and any door is open.

Battery light comes on when accelerating, alternator is ok

I have a 99 Lincoln Continental. The battery light has been coming on when accelerating (sometimes flickering other times solid) some times the radio shuts off. I cleaned the battery connections and took the alternator to be checked. Was told the alternator is good. Any ideas?

In fact the Alternator is on it's way out, I had Taurus that was doing the same thing. When the RPM's were over 3000 the light would flicker. What happens is, the slip rings wear and get out of round and when the RPM's get too high the brushes start to bounce causing the light to flicker. Keep in mind the alternator is spinning about 3 times the speed of the engine. Pick up an alternator it's just a matter of time, mine went about 6 months like that, try to keep the RPM's low.

how to replace spark plugs in a 1999 lincoln continental

Answer

There are 8 plugs in the V8, 4 on each side. Over each plug is a coil that easily pulls off of each spark plug, hence 8 coils. There are two covers--one over each set of 4 coils and plugs.
The front cover has a metal tag on it that reads, "InTake 32 Valve V8". It has two 10 milometer hex screws holding it on. The back cover is the same shape as the front, but is up closer to the window. You will need just the right socket extension to get the back 4 plugs out. Good luck.

the most common cause is a lazy oxygen sensor that just needs to be replaced, inspect all vacuum lines going to motor and make sure all clamps on hoses are tight. especially the air intake. hope this helps! The code you have is for Bank 1 Sensor 1 (Passenger Side Upstream) not switching properly.
