1986 Saab 900 Questions & Answers
1986 saab will crank but won't start. What do I do?
Does it spin freely or does it act like it want's to start? Meaning does it sound like it has compression on the cylinders? If it don't then it may have a broken timing belt. Check the main 3 things you have to have for it to run. 1: fuel, is it getting fuel. you can use some carb cleaner and spray in it while you try to start it. If it starts then you have a fuel problem. 2: fire, check to make sure your getting fire to your plugs, CAUTION it will bite you if you do it wrong. I advise you to have someone help you crank it while you put a plug in one of your wires and lay it on a ground area. DO NOT TOUCH IT WHILE THE CAR IS TRYING TO START!! If your getting fuel and fire, then it will prob be in your timming. Let me know if any of this helps. Thanks Randy I’m happy to assist further over the phone at

Dashboard lite out, how to replace
Get a set of torx screwdrivers or torx bits (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torx) which you'll find are used extensively in the 900. Also have a good torch or light handy. Undo the torx screws (3 from memory) that hold in the speaker grille on the side the dash is. Lift out the speaker (remove spade connectors from the speaker if you want it completely out of the way) and you'll have access to the back of the dashboard cluster.
Try to locate the plastic bulb socket holding the faulty light, and give it a quarter turn to release it. This can be a bit hit and miss, but you should be able to find it by a process of elimination. The bulb is removed by simply pulling it out of the plastic socket.

1st - 3rd gear all
These are very good cars and that is young. The way these cars are set up though, the oil pan IS the top of the transaxle. The engine faces towards you as you are sitting in the car. These are not easy to fix. Or cheap. If this car is a turbo and driven a little like a sports car, it wouldn't be uncommon for this to happen. Fist because of take off and third because you would down shift to this gear on the highway to pass. You will need to find a reputable transmission technician that is willing to take these cars on. Let me know if there is anything else you need.
How can i make the
Unfortunately if nothing has been tampered with and the unit will not work, replacement of the unit is going to required. Let me know what else you need.
My 1st 2nd and 3rd
My opinion is that the automatic gearbox is too used inside after so many years of lifetime. If you can find a second hand one in good condition at a reasonable price, take it and replace it on yours car. This is a better idea, than repair yours old transmission with new pieces inside at high prices and difficult to find.
Changing valve stem seals in a 86 saab with 2.0
There are special tools for replacing the seals but they are not necessary. You need a special valve spring compressor for removing the springs, there are several types that should work. The types will differ depending on of it is on or off the vehicle.
How to replace the head lamp on a 1990 Saab 900?
STEP 1
The following steps were for a 99 95 but should apply to all cars with slight variations. Unlike with some other types of cars... the wiring to your burnt-out headlamp (not to the Head...light Assembly) is hidden. First, find the large dome-like black plastic cover on the back of the headlight assembly. Rotate it slightly to unlock, and it should fall away.
STEP 2
Grasp the plastic connector that is now revealed, and wiggle it from side to side while pulling toward the rear of the car.
STEP 3
Depress the upper part of the metal restraining clip so that it can swing down and out of the way.
STEP 4
Gently pull, or rotate and pull, the headlamp out of the headlight assembly.
STEP 5
Being careful not to touch the glass on your new headlamp... (use a clean cloth)...grasp the lamp by the two metal tabs and gently insert it into the hole in the assembly.
STEP 6
Replace the connector.
STEP 7
Replace the black plastic cover, rotating slightly to lock. Check to make sure it is locked in place.
