2004 Saturn VUE - Answered Questions & Fixed issues
2004 Saturn Vue V6 high RPMs in drive & while shifting?
Our Pro Technician Jeff Armer provides a great answer to solve this question
- Jeff Armer Apr 21, 2023Manual or automatic transmission? AWD or FWD? Is the check engine light on ? Did you have the vehicle scanned for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes? That vehicle has A PCM - powertrain control module , meaning the engine an transmission control are in one module. That vehicle also has Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) System , the computer controls the idle . Was the battery recently disconnected? If it was, this will cause higher idle speeds till the computer relearns correct idle set points.
Rough, Unstable, or Incorrect Idle and Stalling
Sensor Checks
• Inspect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. A fixed or inaccurate ECT sensor reading can cause the engine idle to surge or race. Using the scan tool, compare the ECT with the ambient air temperature on a cold engine. If the engine coolant is 5°C (9°F) more than or 5°C (9°F) less than the ambient air temperature, inspect the resistance of the coolant sensor. Refer to Temperature Versus Resistance - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor . If the ECT is significantly less than the ambient air temperature, inspect the coolant sensor electrical circuit for high resistance.
• Inspect the throttle actuator control (TAC) system for correct operation.

Idle Learn
Install a scan tool.
Diagnose and repair any DTCs before proceeding with this procedure. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List for the applicable DTC that set.
Ensure that all electrical loads and accessories are OFF.
Turn OFF the air conditioning.
Ensure that the vehicle is in PARK or NEUTRAL.
Turn ON the ignition.
Clear the DTC information with the scan tool.
Wait 5 seconds and start the engine.
Operate the engine with no load at 3,000 RPM until the ECT reaches 90°C (194°F).
Important: If the engine cooling fan turns ON during the idle portion of this procedure, do not include the fan run time in the total idle time.
Let the engine idle with the THROTTLE CLOSED and the engine cooling fan OFF, for a total of 5 minutes.
The PCM has a new learned idle position.
The idle learn procedure is required when the following service procedures have been performed:
• The throttle body assembly is replaced
• The throttle valve is cleaned--Deposits can build up in the throttle body requiring periodic cleaning of the throttle valve and throttle bore area. Refer to Throttle Body Inspection and Cleaning .
• The Clear DTCs function has been performed
• The PCM has been programmed.
• The PCM is replaced

04 Saturn Vue 2.2 changed 02 sensor bank 1 sensor 2 now getting code PO420??
The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0420 "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold" is one possible outcome following the Catalytic Converter Monitor (test). This monitor is one of the last tests to be performed by the powertrain control module (PCM) because other failures in the system could compromise this test's result. Catalyst efficiency is tested by observing the oxygen sensor signals both before and after the catalyst. Before the catalyst, the signal should appear as a sine wave as it switches back and forth between rich (0.9 volts) and lean (0.1 volts). After the catalyst, the signal should be flat-lined on the rich side (about 0.7 volts). This is because a healthy catalyst will store oxygen and therefore remove the "lean" portion of the signal/waveform. If the signal after the catalyst still appears as a sine wave, the PCM concludes that the catalyst can no longer store oxygen and should therefore be replaced. In your specific scenario where a downstream (post-cat) O2 sensor was just replaced, I would theorize that this sensor had failed and was flat-lined. Then when it was replaced two things happened: 1.) the oxygen sensor began to work properly which allowed the oxygen sensor monitor (test) to complete, and 2.) the catalyst monitor then ran and used the new (accurate) sensor data to determine that the catalyst efficiency was below threshold. How to check saturn vue transmission fluid
2004 Vue with 6-cyl Honda engine: Dipstick handle is hard to find unless well lit- dark blue and "D" shaped. Driver side, low. Presumably check in Park with engine running and trans at normal operating temp.

Transmission will not shift out of 1st gear
Did you scan for codes? If there are codes pull them out
provide me with them and I'll try to diagnosis this. This could be anything. The shifter may be defective the transmission range sensor aka manual shift valve may be defective. When your in first is it slipping?

2006 saturn vue 4cl will
With all the electronic's on vehicle's the first place to start would be to hook up a scan tool that can pull code's from all the modules on the vehicle ! The wrench light on ,code's are stored in the BCM ,body control module . If you don't know that your best bet ,take it to a qualified repair shop. Nothing your going to be able to do .

I have a saturn vue with a front wheel drive v6.
the misfire fault (p0300 for random misfires or p 0301-08 for individual cylinder misfires) is seldom as a result of plugs
It is more likely from
low fuel pressure ,pump , EVAP not venting ,dirty injectors , wiring to the injectors , injector control, or ECM
simple fix is to put a can or 2 of injector cleaner in the tank and go for a good drive
next is to replace the fuel filter
more involved is to have the fuel pressure tested to check for pump and pressure regulator operation

At lower speeds (30-40mph), the rpm's fluctuate
Hi, Due to fact you still have warranty I strongly recommend to take it back to where you purchased as otherwise they can claim you have created the problem by messing with it. Sounds like faulty RPM Gauge or slight air leak in fuel side. This is best I can advise as you do not state model or make of vehicle, still take it back to dealer 1st. Please leave me feedback, Malcolm Campbell.
