Reverse lights on a 1998 Hyundai Elantra won't come on?

all fuses good ?is it an auto or standard ?do you have a test light to see if there is power going back there if its an auto maybe a safety neutral switch if its a standard maybe the eswitch on the gear box

Check engine light, sluggish, back firing

do you have any strong smell coming out of the exhaust end like gun powder? if you do so possible you have either broken or blogged catalyst. The other possible fault is most common the vacuum leak.

How do i check to see if the heater core valve is opening

I don't think your car has one. At least I don't list one in the parts book. Most models have a blend door that controls air flowing thru the core. Low coolant in the radiator can cause no heat also.
