2004 Hyundai Santa Fe problems- Help!

i have a 2004 hyundai santa fe and i've had the same problems. it's so random when it happens but it seems to be when its a bit warmer outside.. above 70 degrees. it's when i press the gas from a stopped position the car just almost dies. i've pulled out in traffic and thought i was going to get killed. then the car accelerates and the tires squeal and the engine revs super high. the car jerks and its very scary. i bought the car new in 2004 and it started doing it after a few years and it still does it. it's not the gas pedal. it seems like a glitch in the computer or something. it's very dangerous!

Check the accelerator position sensor on the pedal!

If this is what I think it is, on the 3.5 Lit V6, you have an APS (Accelerator Position Sensor) and a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). The accelerator pedal cable is NOT directly connected to the throttle body plate, it's connected to the APS. The APS sends its signal to the ETSCM (Electronic Throttle System Control Module) which in turn activates the ETS Motor located on the throttle body which opens/closes the throttle plate/butterfly. It's a very sofisticated electronic system. Both the APS and the TPS are known to go bad and simply replacing them is no guarantee of fixing problems in this system (often times it does, and frequently it doesn't). You should first verify there is a problem with these sensors (APS and or TPS). They are basic potentiometers (two circuits in each) which provide data to the computer regarding throttle opening for LOAD calculations (ignition timing, fuel injector pulse width, cruise control operation, etc). Best you have this system diagnosed by a professional technician who knows the system.

Car won't start after filling up the gas tank.

Just helped a friend fix this exact same issue on his 2004 hyundai santa fe. Replaced the purge control valve - a $39 part, even from the dealer. Had to get our hands dirty, but it took literally one single hour to replace the part. Filled it up immediately afterward and no more starting problems. Part is located directly behind the manifold - top, rear of the engine compartment - just between the engine

P0172 Fault

P0172 is a trouble code that is set when the ECU senses that there may be too much gasoline present in the air-fuel mixture of the engine. A proper air-fuel ratio of about 14.7:1 is vital to obtain maximum engine power and fuel economy The fuel mixture grows rich and eventually, the code sets. An "over reporting" Mass Air Flow Sensor can be a common cause of a code P0172 and P0175. Essentially, this means that the Air Flow Sensor is telling the computer that much more air is entering the engine than actually is.

Yes, time to do these things. FYI - you can purchase a complete kit for Water pump replacement which includes the timing belt, tensioner, gaskets, etc. You can't get to the water pump without first removing these items anyway, so do it before the pump fails or worse, the timing belt breaks and grenades your interference fit engine. Example here: Amazon com Evergreen TBK313WPT 99 05 Hyundai Sonata Santa Fe Optima 2 4L... Plugs are a piece of cake and it's time for those as well. Replace coolant, and while you're at it, the thermostat. I hope this helps. helpful-rowrfu10slju0iejfqxy2apg-1-0_6.png
