sounds like auto shutoff relay or fuel pressure issues..also check for a plugged up fuel filter..88 has a carb that may need a shot of cleaner spray to open up clogged internal passages and look for loose vacuum lines somewhere..

check the needle and seat for gunk not allowing the float to shut of the needle . Check that the automatic choke is adjusted correctly and not staying longer that it should. Check timing position. Replace the air filter

There is a 'wot' (wide open throttle) switch somewhere connected to the gas pedal or the fuel system. Usually it only turns off the air conditioner to protect it from excessive rpms. Are you using a good quality conventional oil? Older cars don't do well with cheap oil or synthetic. I recommend Valvoline conventional, my truck has over 200000 on it and runs great.

the engine light will not come on unless the fault is detrimental to the engine or gear box. Run fault codes to find misfiring coils and injectors or other sensors that is causing the problems.
