ever had the trans serviced? could need a new filter and fluid change. the fluid breaks down after a while and the filter gets dirty causing the fluid to heat up from the fact it cant flow as well to the cooler

is it slipping or hard to get in gear ,well either way if its a hudraulic clutch then the answer is no ,its a new clutch time

Follow the lower radiator hose to where it attaches to the engine. Remove the clamp from the hose. Remove the 2 screws that hold the small black cover in place. The thermostat is under that cover.

must have timing lite. Hook timing lite up to battery place spk lead to #1 cylinder remove cover from data link connector (rectangler box on fender well) lid of box has diagram of pins short pin TE1 to E1 loosen distributer and set timing to spec. Spec should be on emission lable under hood.

i would guess the timing belt.

The timing is not likely adjustable. Assuming the belt was put in correctly and everythiing was lined up perfectly , it should be good to go.

The engine light is telling you that there is a code stored that will tell you what went wrong.
Without the codes, there are way too many possibilities.

To determine if ignition or fuel, next time use an inductive light to see if there is spark at the wires, or try a little starting fluid spray.

It could also be the EGR or purge valve, the fuel filter, or lots of other little minor things.
I would suggest you also get a new mechanic.
No good mechanic should ever say to get rid of a whole car.
Nor should he be unable to tell you what is wrong.

A place like Autozone will read the stored codes for you for free.

Not near enough space here to walk you through the procedure. I suggest that you purchase a repair manual for your RAV4 at any auto parts store. It will have photos and detailed instructions. Also replace the water pump at the same time, as it is driven by the cam belt. Belt should be replaced every 90,000 miles.

No ,use cheapest 20/50 diesel/petrol oil and change every 6000 miles with a oil filter every third oil change this will keep the engine clean inside ,Do this and it will run for ever and a day
