is the engine knocking or detonation or pinging?
is engine running lean (i sure can ping, but the knock sensor rolls back(via pcm) all spark timing, so that ping ends.

97 tacoma tail lights and dash light not working. Fuses and relays seem good.
If you can remove the relay, it is easy to test if you have a multimeter (volts, ohms, amps).
A relay is simply a switch that works electrically, using a low current circuit to turn on and off a high current circuit, for example a headlamp or spot lamp circuit that usually draws anything from 10 to 30 amps, and is switched on by a switch designed to handle only 2 or 3 amps.
Typically it has four contacts, but sometimes contacts are shared, and the relay ends up with just three contacts.
To test the relay (once it has been removed) find the low current contacts. This is achieved by switching the multimeter to Ohms, turn it to the lowest reading (200 or less) and probe any two points on the relay. Carry on testing until a pair is found that shows a reading on the meter. These two points are the "pick" points, or the low current circuit contacts.
Placing a 12 volt current across these two points will close the circuit over the other two points. If you can't find any two points that indicate a reading on the Ohm scale, your relay is shot.
If you've found the two points described, connect a wire to each one and connect one to the battery +, the other to the - or earth, and listen for a "click" sound indicating the closing of the contacts.
The high current contacts can still be faulty, so check with the meter for continuity across these points when the relay pulls in.

What years will interchange transmission with 1997 toyota tacoma
If you can locate the trans serial number that would narrow down any options. Its usually stamped into a flat spot on the trans or on a stamped metal tag on one of the bolts. I would expect only one from the same size/ spec/ model/ year/ production run would be a swap. You don't say what is wrong? Is it not fixable?
