1. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle. Refer to Manual Transaxle Assembly, removal & installation.
2. Disconnect the clutch hydraulic line (6) from the bleeder assembly (2).
3. Disconnect and remove the bleeder assembly (2) from the clutch slave cylinder (3).
4. Remove the slave cylinder-to-clutch bell housing bolts (4) and remove the slave cylinder (3) from the transaxle.

so ast step 1, you then turn to that page.

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
2. Remove the splash shields and drain the transaxle fluid.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
4. Remove the engine appearance cover.
5. Remove the air intake assembly.
6. Unplug the speed sensor connector.
7. Disconnect the back-up lamp switch.
8. Remove the shift cables from the bracket clips.
9. Disconnect the shift selector and crossover cable from the levers. Remove the cables and secure them out of the way.
10. Remove the slave cylinder hose from the bracket.
11. Remove the air inlet tube from the throttle body.
12. Remove the throttle body support bracket.
13. Remove the upper bell housing bolts.
14. Remove the starter mounting bolts and secure the starter out of the way.
15. Support the transaxle with a suitable jack.
16. Loosen the left-upper transaxle mount through-bolt.
17. Remove the transaxle mount
18. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.

RTM

NOTE On A1 and A2 platform vehicles equipped with 010 automatic transaxle, access to the starter motor is limited. Although not necessary, it is recommended that the intake and exhaust manifolds be removed to access the starter.

1. For safety purposes, disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle with jackstands.
3. For A3 vehicles, use a floor jack (with a block of wood on the chock) to support the engine by the oil pan. Do NOT jack the car by the oil pan under any circumstances! The floor jack is ONLY to support the engine while the starter is being removed. The bolts that secure the starter to the transaxle are also used to secure the front engine mount to the transaxle.
4. If necessary, label the small wires before disconnecting them.
5. Disconnect the large cable, which is the positive battery cable, from the solenoid.
6. On 010 transaxle-equipped vehicles, remove the bracket that secures the starter to the engine.
7. Remove the starter mounting bolts, while supporting the weight of the starter.
8. Pull the starter straight out from the transaxle.

NOTE On vehicles with a manual transaxle, there is a bushing where the starter shaft fits into the bell housing. If the shaft or bushing are worn or if the starter has been jamming, the bushing should be replaced. There is a special bushing removal tool available but a small inside bearing removal tool is usually sufficient.

1. Install the starter into the transaxle.
2. Tighten the starter mounting bolts as follows:
3. 1. All vehicles except 010 transaxle:
      M8 nut: 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) M10 nut and bolt: 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm) M12 bolt: 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
   2. 010 transaxle only:
      Mounting flange bolt: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) Mounting bracket bolt: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm)
4. Attach the electrical connections to the starter.
5. NOTE: Be careful not to over tighten the battery cable connection. The metal is soft and the threads will strip easily.

1. Lower the vehicle from the jackstands. Connect the negative battery cable.

2.2L Engine

2. Drain the cooling system.
3. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolts.
4. Remove the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.

To install:

1. Install the thermostat.
2. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe.
3. Install the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt. Tighten the thermostat housing to water pump feed pipe bolt to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
4. If equipped with an automatic transaxle, install the exhaust manifold, as outlined in this section.
5. Fill the cooling system.

3.1L Engines

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the cooling system to a level below the thermostat housing.
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
4. Disconnect the surge tank line from the thermostat housing.
5. Remove thermostat housing-to-intake manifold attaching bolt and nut, then remove the housing.
6. Remove the thermostat.

To install:

1. Clean all gasket surfaces completely.
2. Insert the thermostat in the intake manifold.
3. Attach the thermostat housing to the intake manifold.
4. Install the mounting bolt and nut. Tighten to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
5. Install the air cleaner assembly.
6. Connect the surge tank line to thermostat housing.
7. Refill the cooling system.
8. Connect the negative battery cable, remove the radiator cap, then start the engine. Allow the engine to run with radiator cap removed, until the upper radiator hose becomes hot (thermostat open). With the engine idling, add coolant to the radiator until the level is up to the bottom of the filler neck.
9. Install the radiator cap, making sure the arrows line up with the overflow tube.

Your starter is located on the back side of the engine at the top of the transmission bell housing, under the intake manifold. You can reach the main battery wire, and switch wire, by reaching from the right hand side under the intake manifold, the starter mounting bolts can be accessed by removing the air intake hose. Alero, Grand Am 1999-2005 Thermostat - Removal & Installation 2.2L Engine

3.4L Engine

1. Drain the cooling system.
2. Remove the air cleaner.
3. Remove exhaust crossover pipe.
4. Disconnect the surge tank line fitting from the coolant outlet.
5. Remove the thermostat housing to intake manifold bolts.
6. Remove the thermostat housing outlet and thermostat
7. Clean the mating surfaces.

To install:

1. Install the thermostat and housing outlet.
2. Install the thermostat housing bolts. Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm).
3. Install exhaust crossover pipe.
4. Connect the surge tank line fitting to the coolant outlet. Tighten the fittings to 15 ft. lbs. (21 Nm).
5. Install the air cleaner.
6. Fill the cooling system.
7. Inspect the system for leaks.
