Tip & How-To about Chevrolet Camaro

How to Remove and Install your Spark Plugs the easy Way!!!

Did you ever have to remove and replace either your spark plugs, a customers or a friend and find out first hand how miserable it can be to take them out using a spark plug socket and extension?
You find yourself at times possibly cross threading the plugs into the block due to poor accessibility of the plugs and you find yourself limited to the degree of turns the ratchet can actually turn the plug into the block due to a very very tight situation....well here is your answere...and no it is not let someone else do it for you, but rather over the millions of years I been around cars I learned from others and still am learning from aothers just as you are doing reading these "tips" you come accross.
With a new or old spark plug in your hand go down to your local Auto Zone or Discount Auto Store and purchase a piece of neoprene fuel line approximately six inches long and one that struggles to be pushed onto the silver tip mounted on the top of the spark plug... I knoew it sounds stupid and sound too cheap to really work but guess what....out of all the sears Craftsman specialty spark plug flex sockets and extensions this one really does the trick.
Once you have it attached to the tip of the spark plug you have a real tight fitted swivel tool that will adapt to any contortion you put it to...you will find the plug hole threads in the block and get the plug started simply by "twisting" the rubber hose in the direction of tightening and Walla the spark plug sets itself up for the final tightening with the plug ratchet and socket and you are done....no fuss no muss...no stripped threads into the spark holes, you can do the same method for removal once you break the spark plug loose with the ratchet and spark plug socket and it only costs you pennies on the dollar, buy a good length of this hose so you can cut to any proper length you will need for different difficult to reach spark plugs.
Happy Motoring!!

how change spark plugs

Have a look on the following link for the socket/wrench/tool you will need:
spark plug socket Google Search

To avoid getting the ignitions leads replaced in the wrong order:
Remove ONE lead from ONE plug at a time.
Use the tool/socket to remove that plug by turning anti-clockwise.

Put the new socket in hand tight - this is to avoid cross-threading the spark plug and damaging its threads/threads in cylinder head.

When the spark plug is hand-tight/finger tight, tighten it with the socket /tool. Just 'gently tighten it up' - do not overtighten.

Replace the ignition lead and then move onto the next plug.

-Needle Nose pliers
-Flat head screw driver

-12mm socket
-#5 Hex Wrench
-12mm wrench with closed end on one side

1. Buy replacement spark plugs. I bought Bosch Platinum+2 plugs for about $4/apiece from an online parts store, but from what I've read, the Platinum+4 are much better. They provide much more complete ignition and offer a noticeable improvement in mileage. One anecdote I heard was a friend of a friend who went from 20mpg to 24mpg on his BMW 3-series. The platinum+4 are only $1 more, so the possible performance improvement is well worth it.

2. Get your tools.

3. Remove the engine vanity cover by removing the three bolts near the base (front) of the engine. You'll need a hex wrench to get these out. See the picture below for location. Once the screws are out, rotate the lexus logo 90? and the cover should come off pretty easily.

4. Practice removing one of the easier spark plugs in the front.

5. First, disconnect the electrical connector from the spark plug tube head by pressing the end with your thumb and using a flat-head screwdriver to pry the connector off. Remove the spark plug tube screw using a socket wrench or equivalent. The tube should now slide out. See the picture below for reference. That was practice, now put it back in and replace the screw holding it in place.

6. Clean the area around each spark plug tube using a hand towel, pressurized air canister, or both. This includes the spark plugs behind the intake manifold. This will be tough because you will have to work by hand, but it is important.

7. Start by removing the most difficult spark plugs - in this case, the back ones. It is better to do the easy ones last, in case - for some reason - you give up or can't get the back plugs out. The back plugs are located behind the intake manifold (see picture below). You'll have to get to them through the opening indicated by the '''blue arrow. You can make this more accessible by removing what I think is the cruise control bracket. Loosen the nut indicated by the '''yellow arrow and remove the bolt indicated by the '''red arrow. Warning: these might be very tight.'''''''''

8. Repeat step 5 starting with the rear right spark plug (rear right when facing the front of the car), followed by the rear center, then rear left. When removing the spark plug, be sure not to let any dirt or debris fall into the engine. It could cause sever damage. The best thing to do is to remove the old spark plug, briefly inspect it, and immediately begin installing the new spark plug.

In case of a problem or clarification or my solution was insufficient, don't hesitate to post me a reply.

If you are satisfied, rate my solution with the "thumbs" or (even better) add a testimonial.

how easy is it to change the spark plugs in a 03 highlander?

It is very easy, on all new vehicel, you have to know there is a plastic engine cover on the engine, just simply remove all bolts and set the cover free.Follow on the engine head you will see two head, and you will see 3 black objects these are the ignition coil on the spark plug, just undo the screw and remove them, you can never misplace them becaue they are all have unequal length of electical wire.

Use a spark plug deep socket to remove the spark plug and replace with a new one. always follow the OEM booklet of which one you should use. Reinstall all spark plug by first seat them with your hand tight and then turn them tight enough , do not over torque the thread will damage.

Replace all coils on the plug you will hear or feel a click sound, start the engine and see if any funny thing if not then reinstall the cover and you are set to go..

hope this help...
