Adjusting your rear drum brakes on an older truck

Now some of the newer units you can just go to a parking lot and go in reverse and press down on the brake pedel till it stops a few times, but for some of the older rigs out there you will need a jack, a flat head screw driver and put your truck in neutral. Lift up the *** end of that rig and crawl under so that you are facing the inside of the rear tire. On the inner side of the drum brake assembly (picture a flat round man hole cover with a thumb hole), there will be a small oval or round rubber plug (remember to brush/poke if its dirty or rusty) take it off and you will notice a wierd little wheel gear, take your flat head screw driver and turn it over and over, this will cause the brakes to expand and eventually catch the wall of the drum brake- now since you are in nuetral spin the tire if it cannot then your brakes are set on the drum, turn it a few less revelations so that it will turn the wheel freely again,Be sure to do both sides(rear tires) then remember that process and how long it took you to do it and go to the other side, and turn that side less as well so that your tire will spin- now set your truck down and take that bastard for a test run- you will notice the rear brakes grabbing! and actually working! Don't forget to put the rubber plug back on to prevent moistur damage. Good luck and as always grab a neighbor and some beer and you guys can figure it out.
