The windshield will attempt to fog and you may smell the scent of maple syrup or antifreeze. The heater core requires the dash board to be removed to gain access to it.
Is your floor wet damp carpet? Does the smell kinda smell sweet or like maple syrup? If so your heater core is leaking. Your heater core is up under ur dash inside the van onthe firewall
ok --we will not say head gasket problem
what would you like us to say
we can say , have a compression test done to determine if head gasket or cracked head ---but we won't
we could say take it to an accredited radiator shop for a pressure test to find any leaks
we could say to check engine oil for signs of coolant contamination ( grey oil)
it is impossible to say exactly what is a suitable answer
your heater core has probably sprung a leak.does the fog smell kinda sweet?....check the floor in the front where the floor mats are for moisture or even puddles of antifreeze.(the replacement of a heater core can be very expensive as the entire dash usually needs to be removed to access the heater core)also look under the engine near the firewall for antifreeze drips.
from he Popular Mechanics site if the smell in your car is like maple syrup:
(1) SMELLS LIKE:
MAPLE SYRUP WHEN: After the engine has warmed or possibly even after it's shut off for a few minutes. THE CULPRIT: Coolant containing sweet-smelling (but toxic)
ethylene glycol is leaking from somewhere. It could be coming from a
radiator or heater hose, a failed intake manifold gasket or cylinder
head. It might be coming from a leaky radiator cap or the radiator
itself, especially if you smell it outside the car. A strong odor inside the passenger compartment probably means a bad heater core.
