The only other part of the system would be the flywheel. I suggest getting under the vehicle with a light and give the teeth a good looking over. Rotate the engine by hand to look around the whole perimeter. If the flywheel looks good, make sure the starter has the correct clearance. It might need shimmed out slightly. If it isn't a mechanical issue, look for corrosion on the cable ends or inside of the sheathing.

5. make sure spark works on all 4? cylinder gas engine
6. scan the PCM.
7. if not chain cam, some are some not. belted cam needs service.

The fault is neither of those, check the Throttle Actuator Control System. There will be a broken wire or bad connection along the wiring loom.

I would consult your local lock smith- they have a very good handle on how to cheaply replace keys and fobs.
