There could be many reasons or combination of reasons for this, but proper level and clean fluid would be the first thing to do-you do not mention how many miles or how long or often the trans has been serviced, but that is a major factor in longevity for any trans (especially in a heavy Ford). The slipping is a major consideration--you should make every effort NOT to drive it is such a way so that it slips as this will overheat and greatly accelerate the demise of your trans. You should consider doing a trans service, replacing the fluid and filter-you should be able to even drain the torque converter by removing the flexplate inspection cover, rotating the crank bolt to expose the 10mm drain bolt in the torque converter-this may make a big difference in trans performance, but if you have high miles and the trans has never been serviced, this could cause more harm than good, as it could dislodge all kinds of gunk from years of driving, plugging very small orfices in the throttle body.. You could just nurse it until you find a good, used trans inexpensively, they are plentiful since virtually any v-8 Ford of that era can be used, usually with minor or no modifications. If you decide to do a trans service and it works, consider installing a trans cooler (at least 24,000GVW) as keeping a trans cool dramatically extends the life of any transmission.
