2002 Ford Explorer, driving uphill, cruise control on. All dashlights came on, engine died. Wont restart, sounds like knocking from valve cover, left side of engine when turned over now, once every two or three seconds. WIll not start. 4.0L OHV.
Is it the timing chain you think? Or, is there something else common with these engines?

Fuse # 41 Is battery power for the PCM - powertrain control module , through the PCM power relay an it also powers the heated O2 sensors , vapor management valve , evaporative emission canister vent valve ! You have a short on one of these circuit's . Check the wiring harness an see if it is laying on an exhaust manifold or pipe ! If there isn't power to the PCM it is not going to start !
The only thing I can think is that the cruise control and the other computerized functions all share the same electronic module. The added current to drive the valves of the cruise control might be just enough to cause a temperature failure that cools down back into the operational zone in the 2 to 3 seconds it takes you to restart the engine.
It could also be faulty programming, where the part of the code that causes the failure only gets included in the operation of the car while the CC is on.
It's mystifying.
Call the dealer to see if there is a bulletin or a recall.
