I have a 2008 toyota rav4. i hit the horn pretty hard loading a fence post. nothing happened at the time, but when i drove the car, the horn went off by itself. i could push the horn to stop it. it would go off periodically even with the car off. i disconnected the battery. when i reconnected the batter it seemed to be fixed. my mechanic said that disconnecting the battery probably reset everything. the horn was ok for about 1.5 days then the problem started again. any idea what could be causing this?

SOURCE: 1997 Toyota Camry Lost All Battery Power

I would check your main battery terminals to make sure they are not loose. Sometimes, even when you have reconnected them properly they may not be tight enough to make a good electrical connections...I have seen it a million times and I have also been a victim myself :) If you shake them and they swivel at all that may be your problem. Sometimes another way to tell is if you can move them around and the car starts one time, then later that day or sometime down the road the car wont start again this is a sign that the connection is your problem. You should definately try this first, then go from there.

SOURCE: The car alarm keeps going off in my 2006 Toyota

Hi,

Something you need to be aware of here is that the factory alarm on your prius only detects doors, this meaning if any of the 4 doors, the hood or the back hatch are opened then it detects this and monitors the door positions, if the alarm is armed and a door is either unlocked or opened unauthorized then it sets this alarm off. You can jump on the roof or ram the car with a dump truck and it will not set the alarm off, the factory alarm does NOT detect impact, it only detects door lock/unlock and door open/close. The only way this alarm will go off (other then if you press the red panic button on the remote) is if a door is either unlocked or opened without the use of a key/remote.
The door entry switches would need to be played around with here and a scan tool with data lists are needed, I have seen some cases where the bolt that holds the door switch to the body is loose and causes this.
The Factory Security system has many customizable features that can be turned on or off or adjusted. The Dealer has the ability to do this for you. I would first have them diagnose why it is setting prematurely. Perhaps the sensitivity is set too high. Have them make the adjustments and see how it goes.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

When I went to start the Rav4, the horn began honking and when ingot that off, the entire electrical shut down and it won't start. No previous difficulties noticed? Any idea what's happened?

A weak car battery can cause symptoms just like those. Get a jump start and find a dealership that will test and replace the battery for you.

Water pump barring went out on my 1997 rav4. I heard it knocked the pistons into the values? Is that possible?

The water pump is driven by the cam belt and on some vehicles with an interference engine if the water pump failed and cause the cam belt to break then it could cause internal engine damage. Your 1997 Rav4 water pump is driven by the cam belt but is not an interference engine. So, not to worry as no damage has been done. Just replace the water pump and cam belt and all should be well.
