I was driving my 96 Dodge Stratus ES V6 & I came to a stoplight & the car cut off. I tried to start it back up & all it would do is trun over but wouldn't fire. I tried replacing the fuel pump relay & that didn't work. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor & that didn't help. The car is reading some trouble codes. The codes are: P1783 , P1784 , P0736 , & P0120. Can someone please tell me what the codes mean. I'm trying to do the work myself to save money. PLEASE HELP!!!

remove the gas cap and have someone listen while you turn the key to the on position. You should hear the fuel pump humm for about 5 seconds. The first 3 code are for transmission failures, P0120 is for throttle position sensor circuit problem. this could simply be a ban connection due to corrosion.

First lets define the codes P 1738 shift time error this is a transmission issue
P1784 Transmission mechanical problem 1st and reverse
P0736 Reverse incorrect gear ratio
P0120 Throttle postion sensor switch malfunction. Here is the fix this now make alot of sense when your TPS sensor fails you will affect the performance of the transmission and hence the transmission codes so replace the throttle position sensor this is much easier than the cranksensor and here is the good thing this sensor has no adjustment just drop and go

  • P0736 Improper Ratio for Reverse Gear.
  • P0120 Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor/Switch "A" Circuit Malfunction
  • P1783 Transmission Over-Temperature Condition.
  • P1784 Transmission system problems.

  • All these codes together are pointing to the solenoid pack on the transmission. Something with the actuators and or pressure switches. You can also have something further internally wrong with the transmission.
  • I know your trying to save money but this should be handled by a full on technician and preferably one that specializes in transmissions. I didn't want to have to tell you this but I wanted you to know exactly what you are dealing with.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

The actual not starting is probably your Throttle Position Sensor. (P0120) You can check the connection and try to clean it or replace it.

I will upload a picture to show you where it is located on your car.

You will have to remove the air filter housing to get to this but it is just a couple small bolts holding this in.

    Regards,
    Tony

My 1999 Dodge Stratus ES 3.2L V6. Car will start fine. But car will quit when driving and will restart after about 25 to 30 minutes.

Sounds to me that something is heating up and shutting down, I would suggest monitoring the fuel pressure first. If you can get a fuel preasure gage there is a port on the fuel system as the lines go into the mainafoild. connect the gauge start up and see if you have preasure when the engine dies.

Locating an egr vavle on a 2005 dodge stratus

In my 2001 Dodge Stratus ES sedan (2.7L V6), the EGR has shiny piping that runs into the side of the black plastic intake manifold on top of the engine. The other end runs down beside the engine heads and routes into the rear exhaust manifold.

Hope this helps. Best of luck.

Wont start...

Need to check the condition of the battery. Use a volt meter and check the voltage before trying to start the motor. Have someone to try to start the motor while you check the voltage on battery at the same time. If the voltage dropps to either a 10 or less, replace the battery. If the battery is 4 years old or older then replace it. Hope this will help you.
