You need to check and see if the auto shut down relay is working, with the key on test the dark green/black wire at each injector there should be a constent 12 volt at each wire. if not check the auto shut down relay the relay is located on the left inner finder.

1988 ramcharger, no fire or - johnjnail_215.jpg
4 wires on the relay the red wire should be 12 volt all the time if not check the fusable link at the positive battery post........the dark blue/black wire is the output wire it goes to a splice and then to the fuel injectors and ignation coil and fuel pump relay and to the power supply for the ECM.....the dark blue wire goes to the ECM and is the computer controled ground circuit for the relay if you ground this wire the relay should close ( click ) and send power threw the dark blue/wire.......the dark blue yellow wire goes to the diag. conector.

with the key on there should be 12 volt at the fuel injectors if not check for 12 volt to the red wire on the ASD relay if there is power at the red wire and none at the injectors try grounding the blue wire if still no power to the injectors then replace the relay if when you ground the blue wire you then have power to the injectors get back with me and i will look up the test to test the ECM circuit....good luck

    your welcome

  • Anonymous Aug 17, 2011

i think you are at the wrong relay, there should not be a green wire at the ASD relay. give me the year and model again and weither it is a ram charger or ram wagon and if it is a ram charger is it a ad100 or ad150 or aw100 or aw150 if it is a ram wagon is it a B150, B250, B350.

4 wires on the ASD relay red, dark blue/black, dark blue, dark blue/yellow NO green so i am not sure what you are testing.

check you fuesable links at the bvattery also check the negitive battery post there is a small black wire on that goes from the negitive battery post it is called a power ground make sure it has not burnt into were the wires go under the battery box we see the harness get croded from the vents on the battery, the power ground goes to the ECM and is the wire the computer uses to close all the relays.

Without a voltmeter and a wiring diagram, you're in a bit of a fix. But I would be wondering why the ignition switch isn't sending power to the coil primary positive terminal, and why it isn't causing the fuel pump to be turned on, too.
Is your check engine light on with key on? The computer should sense ignition is on and briefly turn on the fuel pump through the fuel pump relay, on just long enough to pressurize the fuel line to the injector. But no fuel or fire-you'd better start by checking if the ignition switch has power in and power out, and work your way to the coil.

I have an 88 mercury grand marquis sterted drove all day went the next day car wouldnt start someone told me timeing chain jumped replaced that replaced starter selinoid stater spark plugs router router...

Lets start at the beginning.
Did anybody check to see if the timing chain was really in need of replacing ?
Did you replace the starter and solenoid because it would not crank ?
Is it now getting spark to the plugs, and fuel to the injectors ?
Are the injectors getting voltage and a ground signal from the computer ?
Do the cylinders have proper compression ?
Is the rotor in the distributor turning when you crank the engine ?

I have replaced my fuel pump and fuel pump relay and the car(1988 Lincoln Town Car) ran fine for two months. Now it will not start. The fuel pump relay has 4.6 volts when the ignition is on, it is not...

Have to look at a wiring diagram to figure that out

At least I would.

Does the relay energize in your hand,
with batt & grd on coil & ohm meter on
it's contacts, to see if their burnt?

e.g. do you need 12 + volt for it to work

Your looking for a voltage drop ---maybe

Don't rule out the ignition switch it gets a lot of use

What does the ignition coil do?

the ignition coil changes low voltage from the battery (12 volts) to high voltage (about 50,000 volts) to fire the spark plugs and ignite the fuel in the engine cylinders and drive the piston down

318 starts but wont stay running blows black smoke out tailpipe. It has new fuel pump, filter, timing chain plugs,wires...

The older chrysler products have a ballast resister on the firewall that is used for dropping the voltage to the ignition coil. During a start procedure, while the key is turned all the way in start position 12 volts bypass the resistor forcing a high output of coil voltage. When you release the key to the run position 12 volts goes ito the resistor & a lower voltage of around 6-7 volts comes out, & goes to the coil.
What happens, is the resistor breaks inside and no voltage is coming out the resistor. Thus only a start condition exist with no run.

1988 jeep comanche will start only when you hold tumbler in the start position, when you relese it, engine stops.. engine is a 4.0 auto, fuel injected 4x4

If the car has a resistor coil with a ballast resistor to drop voltage from 12 to 8 then check the resistor wiring. When you engage the starter tumbler it by passes the ballast resistor and sends 12 volts straight to the eight volt coil to get good spark. When you release it the 12 volts goes through the resistor to 8 volts and then the coil. If there is a fault in this circuit the engine stops. Jump the 12 volts straight to the coil and start it. If it keeps going the ballast circuit is faulty. Paul
