Tank does not need to be removed. Pump can be removed from access panel in the trunk of car. See those posts which tell you how to do this. Again, no need to remove tank or get exhaust system out of the way. Though I am not going into it here, there are others who tell (post) the right method for doing it. Anyone tells you you must remove, or drop the fuel tank on a 96 Riviera to change or replace fuel pump is telling you wrong.
I am pretty sure this car has an inspection cover in trunk to gain access to pump assembly without dropping tank

You just need to remove that which is in the way. If you have to remove the exhaust system, then that is what you have to do. It makes for a lot more work, but if it is necessary then it is necessary.

there is an access panel in the trunk. its towards the front right corner of the car under the carpet. there should be 6 or more 5-7 mm screws the hold down the cover. use a screwdriver to pry up on it. there is a metal ring that holds the pump in place. you will have take a hammer and a flat head screwdriver tap the ring off. remember lefty loosey righty tighty.
