I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant and need to know how to put on a valve cover gasket. Oil is leaking out and dripping and it's causing it to burn and smoke comes out of the car.

First you need to remove anything that is in the way. Make sure if you disconnect any wires or hoses you mark them so when you put them back you know where they go. When you get to the valve cover remove the bolts, gently tap on the side of the cover with a rubber hammer to loosen up. Once you have it off remove old gasket and clean mating serfaces, coat new gasket with sealer on both sides and install. Remember tighten bolts in a circular pattern from the center out, and do not over tighten. Good luck

Instructions

    • 1 Allow the car to cool. Disconnect the battery terminal. Remove the right side vent screen top extension. Disconnect the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and brackets.
    • 2 Disconnect the left hand side coil wires and spark plug wires. Remove the spark plug wires, valve cover bolts and the valve cover. Unplug the electrical connections from the intake manifold runner control actuator. Unfasten the actuator retaining the screws, right bank heated oxygen sensor front and rear.
    • 3 Remove the heated positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. Remove the heated oxygen sensor plug and the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor. Disconnect the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and bracket. Remove the valve cover bolts, the valve cover and the old valve cover gasket. Clean the valve cover seating area with automotive engine cleaner and place the new gasket in the gasket seating area.
    • 4 Replace the parts that were removed and disconnected by reversing the steps. Replace the valve cover gasket and tighten the bolts, in sequence, ensuring not to over tighten. Put back the ignition coil with power transistor and its wiring and bracket, the heated positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve, the heated oxygen sensor plug and the Differential Pressure Feedback EGR (DPFE) sensor.
    • 5 Add oil to the car. Start the car and let it run at idle for a while to check for leaks..

The probable cause is oil dripping onto the exhaust and being burnt. This puts the valve cover gasket as the prime suspect as the other two areas are lower down

My 1999 Town n Country limited is dripping oil near front passanger tire.
more than likely you have a valve cover leak its common you will need to re move the cover
1 take out the bolts 6 i believe 7/16 socket remove the small bolts
2 pry the valve cover off
3 clean the old gaskets off the valve cover and motor
4 clean the valve cover and paint the valve cover light blue so you can see any leaks
that may happen // i dout if you will have any
5 put a small amount fo permatex (BLACK) it works well with oil and it will hold the gasket in place
once you put the gasket on the on the valve cover put a small amount on the bottom of the
gasget/// you will have permatex on both sides of the gasket
6 now you are ready to in stall tha valve cover back on the motor and put in all the bolts finger
tight once all the bolts are in you want to snug the bolts don't try to tighten the bolts to much
or you will cut the new gasket
7 now that every thing is back in check your oil level and run the engine for ten min this will set up
the new gasket and give the permatex a chance to cure

done deal

Can i drive 2000 miles with a leaking valve cover gasket? Actually it is more like seeping...... and has been doing so for maybe 500 miles...... will it cause other problems
You will likely be just fine. It will just smell bad if the oil drips on the exhaust.

Where are all the oil leaks.. that causes the car to smoke
when a car is smoking from oil leaks like what your describing its due too several things. commonly is that your head gasket could be torn or just old and is mildly leaking oil into your piston cylinders. The other issue is your piston rings could also be bad and in that case you will have too pull the bottom half of your engine apart too replace the rings. Oh i almost forgot that the valve cover gaskets could also be old and that would cause a leak onto your exhaust manifold, thous causing it too smoke as well

We have oil in the spark plug wells
Most likely you have a leaking valve cover gasket. There is a gasket the goes around the valve cover, and also a gasket where the cover mates to the head for the spark plug holes.

2000 Mitsubishi Galant, EA3A 2.4l motor. Oil leal
don't use 20w50 that is too heavy an oil for that motor. the most i would use is like a 10w40 and that is a last resort. your valves need adjusting or the hydraulic lash adjusters may be gunked up. there is a chemical called auto-rx (search web) that could help you out. just follow the directions for it. the only other oil seals i can think of are oil pan gasket, oil filter gasket, rear main seal, valve cover gasket.
