1985 Volvo 240 no fuel no spark

Car was running well then stalled two days ago. Now it won't start.
It turns over at normal speed w/ ignition. Neither fuel pump gets power w/ignition. With fuel pump relay bypassed pumps deliver good volume of fuel to fuel injector rail. Car will not start with fuel pump relay bypassed. No spark at plugs. I'm stuck.

The relay is $50 and I have replaced it once already. My manual has diagnostic for the relay and the relay passes. The diagnostic says there is likely an open to the ECU or bad ECU.
I checked my timing and it was correct.
I have been assuming that there is only one problem that causes the pumps not to get power and the sparks plugs not to fire. Afraid it may be the ECU, but would like to rule everything else out first.

Well first the fuel pump relay is bad, that is easily replaced. next you have no spark. the first thing you do is take the cap off the distributerand crank the engine. if it spins that tell syou thyat at least the tang or gear on the shaft of the distributor is ok and not broken. next thing is remove the #1 plug and use a 1/4 drive extension 6" long and turn the crank by hand until the #1 cylinder is top dead center(put the extension in the hole of head where the plug was and you should feel the top of the piston also make sure you can feel the top of the piston with half the extension this way you don't drop it in the cylinder with the piston at TDC(top dead center) the rotor of the distributor should be pointed at the #1 firing position. IF it does not that means your timing is off and you need to retime it by taking off timing cover and either replacing the belt/chain or gears. now if you do not have a distributor and you have a coil pack there could be only 2 things that won't give spark. either a bad coil or your altenater is bad(the battery is responsible for starting not running the vehicle like alot of people assume. the altenator energizes the coil which inturngives spark. hope this helps you please rate this thanks

Cold days car will start and run for 3 seconds and stall for 20-30 min until it starts and continues to run

The reason is that , the fuel line is out of fuel, so the running for 3 seconds is just the use of the trapped fuel in the injector line, after which it will stop. The solution is to on the ignition by turning the key without starting the ignition. this allows the fuel pump to release enough fuel into the fuel line and the injection system. Allow this for 5- 7 seconds, then start the car. It will run without interruption.

1991 240 gl not starting.

Sounds like a starter problem. Check that the connections at battery and starter are secure and free of corrotion. You can also try tapping on the starter while the ignition swith is being turned to the start position. If that works replace starter. The stalling can be caused by a number of problems: idle too low, fuel pump pressure to low, air mass and or oxygen sensor malfuctioning. A process of elimination.

1989 Volvo 240 GL: Will not start, no spark, no fuel

it is likely either the Crank position sensor, or the ignition module. (module is in the left front fender area behind the turn signal)

WILL NOT START ALL THE TIME

Had the exact same problem with my 240 wagon. There is a temperature sensor up near the manifold on the drivers side of the engine. This is not the temp sensor that feeds the dash gauge, but one that tells the engine control module whether you are starting hot or cold. Mine was cracked, so the engine computer would get a cold start signal even after the engine ran warm, and would flood. This can be a difficult problem to diagnose and an expensive one when mechanics start swapping parts. You cannot see this sensor, but you can feel it (when the block is cold, please) right under the exhaust manifiold. A replacement is about $80 plus labor. Even my very experienced Volvo mechanic overlooked it. But the car would start and run fine, then leave me stuck when I tried to restart it. After calling AAA for a tow, the temp sensor would reset, then the car would start normally. Cheers. The 240 is a great car - I ran mine up to 235,000 miles; now I have a 740 with the same engine.

1984 Volvo 244 240 DL Stalled and won't start! Please Help

I just put my volvo (same car, possibly the same engine as yours) through a rebuild, and if there is one thing I MUST point out, it is that the head gaskets and the fuel pumps start to act up and give out. Check cylinder pressure, check the P.C.V. system. Another suggestion is to check the last time your fuel filter was replaced. It may be Clogged. Also, on 1980's v-vo's, they had 2 fuel pumps, so get the fuels system pressure checked, one may be broken. The last things I can suggest are the vacuum to the fuel system regulator (fuel injected), distributor point gap (if yours uses points), and the vacuum and electronic emission/operation controls around the car. I hope this helps you out.
