You need to look for an amp draw not voltage. You are on the right track to finding the problem. If you meter has an amp function use that. Connect it in between the battery post and the cable end. Pull the fuses one at the time until the amp reading is gone and that is the circuit that is pulling your battery down. The amp reading you are looking for to pull down a battery over night will be in the 1 to 2 amps. It may not be so easy to see on a analog meter, use a digital if you can. I would start with the Radio, or any add on's such as trailer hitch wiring.

You found your horn circuit pulling amps, then pulled the fuse and it turned off the amps? Is that correct... You left out the fuse and the battery still lost its charge? With the fuse out, get a helper to press the horn button and see if you get a amp reading, at the battery. Next I would disconnect the horns then find the horn relay and pull it. Try this and get back with me. .

  • Anonymous Aug 26, 2011

I will have to research what else in on that circuit. Do you have amps with the relay only out.? Not the fuse.

  • Anonymous Aug 26, 2011

Ok, The Horns share a common connection with your steering wheel air bag. Try and pull the air bag fuse also, lets see what happens.

  • Anonymous Aug 28, 2011

Sorry, been working. If you have pulled the horn fuse and the amps drop to zero. Then the battery should not go dead. Does the battery go down if you leave it disconected over night. Not hook up at all?

Sorry I did not get back to you about this. What if anything new have you done or tried? My next step would be to check all the power ports in the truck. The ports where you plug in your cell phone charger. If something like a foil gum wrapper gets down in one this can happen. Next would be to check the tow light harness if you have one for a rub or bare wire. Check these things and lets see.

Sorry, I have run out of Ideas for you. Please Re-post so others may help you with this problem. This could be a problem with your security system, or door locks. The only other thing I did not have you try was swap the horn relay with some other relay. If the amp draw moves with the relay you have a bad relay. But I do not think that would be the cause your problem.

My 94 jaguar xj6 battery drains even if the car is turned off what could be causing this

I have less than fond memories of tracing electrical troubles in a Jaguar (though much older than yours). Here's the basic process you need to follow:
1. Pull all the fuses. Does the battery drain overnight?
If yes, then a circuit that is not fuse protected is the problem. Start with starter/solenoid, etc. Disconnect each thing and test with meter.
2. If battery drain stops, then use meter to check current drain on each fuse. One will have more than a trickle.
3. Once you find which system is draining, you can narrow it down further by disconnecting each thing on that circuit.

Yeah, It's a pain, and may take days, but you can find it.

Battery keeps draining already put in a brand new alletantor and brattery still draining and battery lights comes on and truck won't start

You would have checked the charging system before replacing the alternator, so I will assume the charging system is good.
If the battery is being discharged overnight or over a few days, you would need to disconnect it and check every circuit on the truck to find the drain.

10 amp draw draining battery overnight on 99 tahoe

I have done this before, put about a 10 amp charger on the battery. Pull the courtesy light fuse first. Look at the battery charger, it is probably charging several amps, pull one fuse at a time. When the charging amps drops down you found the fuse the controls the problem. I had a car several years ago that someone pulled the seat belt all the way out, somehow it was pulling a load and draining the battery overnight.

Batt drain over night

First check the connections at the battery, make sure they are tight, clean and secure.
Then with the ignition off (key out of the switch) disconnect the negative battery cable.
Connect an amp meter (digital multimeter set on amp) between the battery and the disconnected cable end. Wait a few minutes for the modules to power down. (this could take up to 15 minutes at times).

Check the reading. If it is more than 25-30mv you have a parasitic drain in the system.
Leave the meter connected and start pulling fuses one at the time. When the reading on the meter goes from excessive to 0 or close to 25mv you have found the affected circuit.

Find out what is on that circuit, reinstall the fuse, disconnect the components on the circuit one at the time while checking the reading and you will find the problem.

Also, could check this interesting note about Chrysler-Battery-drains-overnight

Hope helps.

Battery loses charge overnight

either you have a bad battery, dirty connections or you have a parasitic drain. go to your local parts store for a battery test .to test a parasitic drain you need a multimeter. disconnect your negative battery cable. put your meter in the amperage setting. hook one lead to the negative cable and the other lead to the negative battery terminal. make sure that the cable is DISCONNECTED from the battery or you will blow fuse in meter or blow meter. read your meter. if it is anything over .5 amps or 50mA then it will fail the test. to figure out where the drain is coming from start pulling fuses. pull a fuse and put it back before pulling another. if the readings drop below the .5a then the problem is in the circuit of the fuse you just pulled. from then on it depends which circuit it is to determine the problem.

Where is my drain coming from?

I would suggest investing in an inexpensive digital mutimeter and do some testing.  Hook it in-line with the hot cable from the battery.  You want to be reading amps, not volts.  That should give you a reading immediately of some current being used.  While it's hooked up, start pulling fuses, one at a time.  if that doesn't stop the current draw, replace it and pull the next one.  Eventually you'll find the circuit that is drawing down your battery.  From there, you have to check individual items in that circuit.
good luck.

Draining Battery overnight

I had the same problem the day I bought the car. My batter was acting weird. Attempts to jump start it resulted in the hood popping open, a buzzing sound underneath the real seat, and my fuel door popping open!

After all of this It turns out the cable to the battery terminal was defective and it was draining the battery and causing these other issues. They changed the red cable and the issue went away.
