I left the ignition key in after turing vehicle off for several hours. Car now is "frozen" where I cannot get key out, nothing works, and shifter is locked.

ignition replaced ???? Ignition switch , the electrical part or key lock cylinder and key ? left switch on 10 minutes ???? That won't work on your vehicle ! Light's lit on insturment cluster ? Car with padlock symbol ,check engine ,service engine soon etc.... The starting system on your vehicle is computer controlled as many fuctions are ! The ignition switch is a low voltage input to the BCM - body control module .
Your best bet , take it back to the dealer .
Sounds to me like the ignition switch itself. If there is no click or absolutely nothing and after several key turns it will work then the ignition switch itself is going bad. I'm not positive if this vehicle has a security key. If it does try another key if have more than 1 for the vehicle or get a replacement key. The ignition switch will either need replaced or could be the switch no longer able to read the security key if it has one.
The ignition lock cylinder tumblers get in a bind all the time on GM vehicles. It probably has little to do with inseting the wrong key. Try inserting the correct key and "jiggle" the key in the lock. You may have to jiggle it up and down and rotate (or try to rotate) the lock cylinder forward and backward. It will probably work just fine if you can wiggle it with just the right combination. If not, you may have a damaged lock cylinder and you will have to replace it. - most likely nothing you did....I change at least two or three of these things every week...VERY COMMON.
replace the ignition switch The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is
operated by a linkage rod. NOTE
On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse
the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not
normally visible.
On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and
the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is
accessible under the dash.

Some cars are sadly weak from the factory. A pot hole can do damage like nothing else as the g forces are those of an accident yet there is nothing obvious that is crashed from the outside. This is going to be a hunt and peck and a hands on repair. I suggest you take this to a qualified Olds mechanic. Ask around - do a local search and you will find a qualified GM mechanic.
As for the ignition - only put one key in the ignition the extra keys weigh down the unit and will ruin them - some quicker than others. So be sure -- only the ignition key on that small key ring spells a longer life.
Does this car have an alarm system? Several models experience a similar issue. Have to leave the key in the on position for close to half an hour allowing vehicle to start. This is also provided that the key switch is functioning properly and the battery voltage is not low.
This could take some patience but it will work. Get some glass cleaner in a spray can. Spray liberally into the lock cylinder. Then using a small hammer or something with a little weight apply turing pressure lightly while tapping the key. Remember lightly. Then once its turned you should be able to get the key to turn. Remember to be patient. It could take up to 15 minutes but it will work. Use an aerosol spray cleaner. These work the best. Good luck.
Sounds like a short in the ignition switch. Next time it does it, try shaking and turning the steering wheel while you're turning the key to start. If this doesn't work, try cycling the switch on and off several times. Chances are, this is your problem.
