1st jack and use jack stands to safely lift the truck.disconnect brake lines and cables, remove tires, unbolt universal rear end to driveshaft, unbolt center bolts from axle to leaf springs, pull the rear end out from the side-much easier with two people. reverse process to put the new one on. I assume when you say axle you mean entire rear end. If you need to remove one axle side just take off tire and brake then remove rear end punkin cover and pull shear pin to remove your ring gear and planetary gear-pull axle shaft.

I bought a re man rear complete except for brakes and drums. I have it ready to come out except I cant figure out how to remove the emergency brake cable form the housing on either side where it enters the casting and connects to the actuator of the emergency brake shoes.

  • Anonymous Sep 26, 2011

The cable enters the housing where the brake shoes are and there is a clevis if you will on the inside that actuated the shoes when you apply the emergency brake. I cant figure out how to remove that set up from the housing so I can remove the whole axle

You need to pull the cable back and slip it off the hooked end of the brake shoe then pull off the clip that holds the cable to the backing plate.

For anyone else that runs into this same problem... here is the answer. After looking at it again after a short break , There is a small pin(roller) that is only exposed when you spread the clevis going to the emergency brake where it activates the emergency brake shoes. Remove this pin and the clevis can be removed. BE CAREFUL it is easy to loose this pin for it is realitively small. I duct taped it to the clevis as soon as I removed it. Then on the back side of the axle housing where the emergency brake cable enters the housing I had to heat the housing up a little and pry the bracket ans cable out of its hole . Upon reassembling I Never Seized everything so this shouldnt be a problem next time. Hope this helps someone else in the future.

SOURCE: remove front axle from differential on 2003 dodge ram

That works fine on a relatively new vehicle but one that has run in salt etc you'll save a lot of time if you remove the steering knuckle completey by separating lower ball joint and outer tie rod end ball joint and bring the whole steering knuckle to a bench to separate the hub/bearing. Soak everything with penetrant, loosen the bolts a few turns and try hitting right on the bolt heads. I also made a very sharp wedge from a chisel and rammed it hard on the other side to seoarate the hub. It will finally come apart then you'll see all the **** that was binding it due to an alumininum knuckle re-acting with a steel hub. Clean the hole and grease everything and fit new bearings

Rear wheel bearing replacement on a 2001 dodge ram 2wd 1500

Pull the rear axles, remove axle seal. There is a special bearing removal tool that attaches to a slide hammer. Insert tool thru center of bearing and use slide hammer to pull out. Use old bearing against new bearing and tap in with hammer

Can not get the cage off of the rear end of a dodge ram 2001 1500 2 wheel drive

If you have the rear differental housing cover, if you check the center of the 3rd member housing ,you will locate a shaft that runs through the center of the housing ,that has the spider gears at the top and bottom. That shaft is held in with a small bolt on the side [5/16 wrench to remove] ..Once the bolt is removed, position the 3rd member to let the
shaft fall out. Once the shaft is removed try to keep from turning the 3rd member or the spiders will fall out...Go to each wheel and push in on the out side of the wheel axle to remove the "C" clip inside the 3rd member and slade axle back to clear third member . Repeat the same on the other axle and that should allow you to remove the third member after the 4 bolts are
removed on the side bearings. Let me know if that helps

On my 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.2 2WD, I just found

This is a very simple job to do. Raise the front of truck off the ground, block the rear tires. Using pliers and a hammer, remove the grease cap from hub. Remove the cotter key and nut from axle, pull out slowly and remove outer bearing. then remove hub from axle. To remove inner bearing ,prop hub on a board and use a large punch to drive out bearing and seal. Clean out inside the hub and install new bearing and seal. Replace all parts in the reverse as you took them off. Hope this will help you.

How do i remove the rear axels on a 2001 dodge ram 1500 4x4 3.6 v8

this is for front axle removing.you have too take off the wheel then the brakes, then you have to remove the 3 bolts on the back of the wheel assembly and lightly take a mallet and tap the wheel assembely out. and it all just pulls out after that. ------------- for rear axle . for the axle shaft, jack the rear of the truck up take off the wheels and brake drums.make sure truck is securly supported with jackstands.remove the differental cover locate the bolt that holds the cross pin in the carrier.remove the bolt, slide out the cross pin.push the axle in towards the center and remove the c-clip holding the axle in.remove the axle shaft carefully so not to damage the bearings or seal. ----------- You need to remove a bolt inline with the axles on the spider gears which holds the center pin in place. Remove the pin, rotate the spider gears to the other side. Now move the axles inward to reveal the c-clips and use a hemostat to remove. Of course the the truck is up on jacks with the tires removed. this will help.

Growling coming from front differential

There's not really a best way. If the axle half shafts bolt to the housing just drop it right out. If not you'll have to remove both half shafts from the wheel hub. Disconnect the drive shaft, and drop it out.

Can't tell you exactly how because i don't know what axle you have, but usually just take the main nut in the center off will bring it right out. Remove the wheel, and the brake calliper first and see if it comes off then remove the center nut.
