When the lock up torque converter starts acting up, it usually upshifts fine but acts like it is stuck in high gear when coming to a stop and usually kills the engine. For a cheap fix, I have seen where people just unplug it so it will not operate. The car will drive alright withuot it but you will loose a little gas mileage by not having it.

can't unplug the solenoid on a 1997, it turns on the check engine light and the transmission just drags like taking off in wrong gear.
this only shakes when RPMs get down to about 1100 on the highway and giving it more gas kicks in passing gear and it stops.
also the engine has a hesitation almost like a misfire, it holds back and has a shake.
has new plugs and wires, all coils are firing, fuel injectors are clean and there is no check engine light
