I have an early 98 S70 T5. When I start the car in the morning it rattles for about 1 minutes, then goes away. The engine sounds fine after that.
I brought it in to a local (non-volvo) mechanic who said that they couldn't find the source and recommended replacing the engine (sound like a rip-off anyone?)
The car sat for awhile while I was deployed overseas, but was recently serviced. Could it be an oil issue? What is a good product to clean out the engine from gunky oil if this is the problem? Thanks
That's actually pretty normal. It's just the engine warming up. Even my friend with a late model Acura has the same prolem so she warms it up before driving. I've heard experts say that warming up your car is just a waste of gas so I presume that the initial knocks are not to be worried about. Something to email Click and Clack on NPR about but I really don't think it's an issue. When I've had two cars run into the 200,000 mile range it didn't seem to be an issue. I always changed the oil before or at about 4k miles.
Take the car out for a long drive and enjoy it. And don't worry.
This certainly is a question for a couple of guru mechanics. I'd submit it to them just to see what they say.

Oil pan rings? It could be an oil pressure problem. If the engine runs okay when warmed up after a while I'm sure there is a reasonable solution rather than replacing the engine. I've used a small amount of transmission fluid in the oil of older engines I've had to keep them slick and running well. Kind of like STP treatment or such. A school bus mechanic recommended it to me and when I told a few other "piston heads" I knew about it they all heard it was an okay idea. Maybe a half cup or so. You probably have some gunk on the valves or cam shaft or something. I'm encouraged still that it runs okay when warmed up.

I've been reading around and it sounds like it might be oil pan o-rings. Thoughts?
