1996 jeep cherokee 4.0 engine. jeep stalls after running for awhile, especially after being stopped at a light, and I push the gas pedal to go, and the engine dies. It cranks and cranks, but no start unless I hold the gas pedal all the way to the floor, and it will start, but cough and sputter for some time afterwards. holding the gas pedal to the floor after it dies is the ONLY way to get it to start and run again. the fuel pump has been replaced, and the fuel system has been cleaned. Any suggestions?

I would do a fuel pressure test first. Attach the fuel pressure gauge to the fuel fail and see if the engine has enough pressure when it dies. If it does then you will need a scanner to see which sensors are causing the problem.
it sounds to me like you have inferior gas in the tank, or some water has gotten in your fuel. you may be able to add a little denatured alcohol to the gas and it may burn off the water. good luck
This sounds like a bad idle air control valve, but also make sure the throtlebody is clean, use a toothbrush and some throtlebody cleaner, spray and clean with brush, make sure to open plate by having someone hold gas pedal to floor, after cleaning if truck still stalls then replace the idle air control valve,
it looks like your engine is having an over rich fuel mixture maybe, thatswhy when you press the pedal to the floor it starts becouse you allow lots of air to help clean the mixture while cranking, also you should have black smoke in the tailpipe until it cleans up and runs fine, i think youre having a leak in one our more injectors you should check them first for proper seal under pressure these is done in an injector test machine, second it may be a defective map sensor these trucks some times have a bad map and dont give a MIL (malfunction indacator lamp) and last but more rare to be is a blocked fuel pressure regulator chek fuel pressure it should be between 38 and 45 psi and it shoul hold these pressure when you turn off the engine if pressure drops fast its injector seal problems or fuel pump check
My 2000 Grand Cherokee had the same problem, without all the sputtering, it would just die approaching a stop. We could only keep it running by slightly pushing down on the gas petal when coming to a stop. I replaced the Throttle Position Sensor, but that didn't change anything. A new mechanic I found replaced the Idle Air Control Valve, and we've had no problems in a week.
