I drove car up town. The tank is full and fuel gage read full when I left, but up town it dropped to 1/2 and 1/4 and empty in a matter of minutes. What could be causing this problem.
A few things could end with these results. A faulty Fuel Sending unit, an issue with the gauge directly or a poor connection at the sending unit its self. I would start with the wiring and go from there. Check at the fuel tank where the wiring connects for the fuel pump and sending unit for corrison, a good cleaning and some ***-electric grease will do wonders.

Michael, take vehicle into a good shop and have scanned to see what diagnostic codes are in computer, have shop estimate repair.
Issue with fuel gage could be bad wire/plug or faulty sending unit.

Your fuel pump is faulty.Ive done 20 of these things.....very common.....super easy to do. less then 3 hours time and do replace the fuel straps and expect to spend around 500 bones for labor and materials
i would replace the fuel pump. and the reason your gas gage is not reading what it is supposed to be is because the sending unit is prob bad. both of which are in the gas tank. im not sure on that year but i think you can remove the back seat or a piece of the trunk to get to both of them. if not the gas tank will need to be dropped to get them out
It sounds like the fuel level sending unit located on the fuel pump is malfunctioning. The solution for this is to have it replaced. You can do this yourself but I wouldn't recommend it as the vehicle needs to be lifted and the fuel tank needs to be dropped out. This can be preformed for about 100-150 in most shops.
They could have installed the wrong pump assembly. I would first check to see if the float arm is binding on something not allowing it to reach the empty position. If you take the assembly out, have the key onand work the sender up and down thru its travel and see if the gauge matches the sender position. Disconnect the wire going to the pump so it doesn't get damaged.
Fuel gage not reliable.
