On the 4 cylinder motor (2.3L,2.5L), the coolant temp sensor can be located
on the left side rear of the engine, below the cylinder head.

A picture of a typical Coolant Temp Sensor (aka ECT) is below:

Be sure to partially drain coolant below the level of the sensor to avoid spillage when removing the old part. Best of luck on your repair!

The thermostat is electrically opened by the computer, there are two coolant temp sensors, one is to the gauge the other is cylinder head temp that the computer reads to know when to open the thermostat, when you place the thermostat in water to test, it won't open enough (fail safe only)

What is a coolant temp sensor on a 2001 plymouth neon

the coolant temp sensor lets the cpu know when to turn on the fans when the coolant temp is high. It also shows the temp on the gauge in the car. I also have seen where if they go bad they will make the car run funny. It is located on the drive side in the cyl head on neons

There are two sensors connected to the thermostat housing and i need to know which sensor is which and what they control. on cold days i cant get started

The larger of the two is the coolant temperature sensor. The other is the actual gauge temperature sensor. The coolant temp. sensor gives information to the cars computor & when the car reaches a predetermined temperature, the computor changes the ignition timing allowing the car to run at normal operation temperature settings. The temperature sensor gives info to the dash board gauge &/or temp. warning light. The reason you can't start on cold days is that your coolant temp. sensor is stuck in advanced mode & the timing is to far advanced . To remedy this problem change the coolant sensor. Good luck!

The wiper switch is most likely bad. Check the coolant level for the temp. issue. Low coolant will cause a gauge to shoot up suddenly

1991 Toyota Camry Temp gauge inoperative

Switch ig. on, ground the sender unit wire for about 3 seconds see if the temp. gauge moves, if so change sender unit, if not then it is a faulty gauge reader.
