If its a single click every time you turn the key to the crank position you need a starter.

If its a series of clicks when you hold the key in the crank position you need a battery.

I would have the battery, alternator and starter checked. A battery that is old will do the identical thing you described. Climate and age are a big factor on a batteries performance along with the alternator output to keep it charged.

Three time in the past six weeks, when I tried starting the car, I got clicking sounds. Eventually, the car started and I was able to drive it without any problems.

sounds like your starter is going out. is your car automatic or manual? sometimes when you turn the key and it just clicks it want to start but not firing. I would do three things and go to auto zone and have your spark plugs checked then have them check your altenator and starter. After doing this it should give you an axact idea on what the problem is before you go and spend money on something you dont need. Narrow it down first then replace it. Mine did that and it was the starter then later after a year did the same thing and this time one of my spark plugs was not firing so it only cost me the plugs the second time. goodluck

You are probably experiencing a failing starter relay. The contacts begin to corrode from the current drawn when starting the car. This causes poor conduction and the clicking you hear. Eventually, it will stop working altogether. The starter relay was added as a recall item to prevent the same thing from happening to the ignition switch (which it did in vehicles before the recall). The starer relay can be found in the very fromt of the engine compartment, just to the left of the battery, mounted on the back side of the radiator crossmember.

My 96 subaru legacy w/2.2 engine wont start especially when cold.if i keep turning the key on and off it clicks then will eventually catch

If you turn the key to the crank position and all you hear is a single click than the starter is probably bad. Especially if you keep trying and the starter eventually starts working and starts the vehicle. This is usually caused by either bad contacts in the solenoid or worn out/dirt brushes/commutators. Buy repeatedly making the solenoid click you get what every is not working to move just enough to make a good connection and get everything working again.

2006 CTS: Wouldn't start (not dead battery) Burning rubber smell.

My first guess would be the fuel pump is going bad. Sometimes jarring it a bit will make it work again and the tow may have done it. If it does this again have someone bang on the bottom of the gas tank while cranking, if that cures it then you'll know for sure.

My 1986 cadillac cimmaron will not start

Try having the vehicle jump started to see if it will start that way. If so, your battery is not holding enough of a charge to crank the engine. If it still doesn;t start the solenoid or starter is bad.
