Electronic Throttle control light came on and car died

I was driving at 60 MPH when the warning signal sounded and the information panel said "electronic throttle control" as I was pulling over, the car engine shut off. No power to the engine after that. Lights worked, but no power came to the engine. What is wrong with it?

i have the same problem i have a 2005, i was just driving about 45 when mine dont that and it shut off to.

  • Anonymous Oct 02, 2008

I had the exact same problem with my 2005 Expedition traveling at 40 mph.  After an hour, car started fine and I drove to a ford dealer for service.   The truck was scanned and no problems were noted.  The dealer's service dept recommends replacement of the throttle housing to correct problem.

  • Doodlebugz Oct 11, 2008

My 2005 Ford Expedition has the same problem. Took it to the local dealership and was told that it may have been some moisture and probably would never happen again. In the last months it has done it several times. Dealership says this is about a $700 repair! Sounds like this problem is common to this make and model. Is this a complicated repair?

  • samrath001 Oct 23, 2008

Has anyone actually got this problem fixed and what was the outcome? Is replacing the throttle housing a pretty big job? Can a noobie like me do it myself? Please help

  • mporo954 Oct 29, 2008

Will removing the positive battery cable reset the computer and allow the sensor to reset?

  • Anonymous Nov 01, 2008

I was pulling out into traffic and the electronic throttle signal came on and the car would to rev or move. I cut the car aff and it would not start for several min.

I was driving about 40MPH when the Message Center tone sounded and the message read "Check Throttle Control". The engine continued to run, however, the accelerator became inoperable. We managed to limp to a side street where I shifted into "park" and switched the ignition switch to "off". I checked under the hood to no avail. Then depressed the accelerator 2-3 times. After about 5-8 minutes, restarted the engine and depressed the accelerator slightly and the engine revved. I shifted into drive and took the vehicle back home.

The vehicle seems to operating fine, but we're just uneasy that this will occur again. Has this problem been occuring with other folks? Has anyone else came up with a solution?

  • Syclopse Nov 05, 2008

Same problem here, quoted $595.00 for the repair from a ford dealership.

Sad thing is I was sold a Ford ESP Warranty, and they stated this throttle issue is not covered under my extended plan. Absurd.

Careful where you buy your vehicles from is all I can say.

  • mrsad Nov 06, 2008

I've been very happy w/ my Ford 2005 Ex. up until now. I have the same promblem.

  • Anonymous Nov 10, 2008

I have a 2005 Ford Eddie Bauer 4X4 Expedition. Without warning, I had no acceleration . I coasted to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off. I looked in the manual for electronic throttle control code and then turned the vehicle on . It has been fine since but it is unnerving to think it could happen again.

  • Anonymous Dec 03, 2008

I had the same problem. This time, my check engine light will not shut off!

  • Anonymous Dec 19, 2008

same problem very intermittent, but now check engine light on.car runs ok though

  • HarKat01 Jan 08, 2009

I have had the same problem with my 2005 expedition. It actually just happened this morning on my way into work. Thankfully I was right by a gas station and pulled over, turned the car off and back on and it ran fine, but it is still really scarry when it happens.I don't understand why there isn't a recall on this for the 05 Expedition yet? It seems as if a lot of 05 Expedition owners are having the same problem. I am definitely going to go to Ford and say something, because this is just way to dangerous to drive with this issue. I never drive in the middle lane on highways now for fear that this could happen at any time.

I bought my truck brand new from ford, so I have never had to worry about what a previous owner did to the vehicle. I always take it in to my mechanic for it's regular maintenance. The first time this happened to me my truck only had maybe 20000 miles on it, no reason for there to be any mechanical issues.

  • tlddd Jan 12, 2009

This happened in my 05 Expedition for the first time; ~50,000 miles on it.  I was using cruise control at 55 mph, and the car gradually accelerated to about 70 on it's own.   When I touched the brake, the cruise disengaged and the 'check electronic throttle control' led message appeared.   I had trouble maintaining speed, the engine was working but seemed to be running rough until I could slow down, pull off and park.    It continued to idle, and didn't sound different.  When I opened the hood, I heard a clicking sound, but I don't know if that was unusual or not.   I stopped the engine, restarted the car, and continued on my trip with no more problems yet.  I agree this should be a recall item.

samd thing - 2005 Ford Expedition EB doing 65 on hwy when signal sounded and check "electrical throttle" came up. Power died as I pulled onto shoulder (inside of highway). Waited a few minutes then was able to restart engine but light remains on.

  • sshi9309 Jan 12, 2009

I just encountered this problem today, while driving down the highway at 55 mph. It is not covered under my warranty, FORD has too know this is a issue and within one month so many owners of 05 Expeditions are experiencing this. I am call FORD!

  • Anonymous Jan 14, 2009

Does anyone have any idea how the throttle body can fail? I have the same problem, but I do not understand what can fail on the throttle body. I can see the throttle postion sensor. trying to fix without involving dealer. Any help is appreciated.

the part number woule be helpful. thanks

  • AmieMcD12 Jan 15, 2009

I was wondering the same thing. I was with my son picking up my other son from pre-k and I was in the left hand turn lane. I was coasting and I went to step on the gas and it would NOT go. I turned on my blinker immediately and crossed 3 lanes of traffic so I could pull over. Thank God people slowed down otherwise we would have been in a wreck on top of the "throttle"issue. My truck was still running but when you hit the gan NOTHING would happen and that same warning abouth the throttle came on. LUCKILY I have an extended warranty but as all of you I am at 50,000 miles and this is happening. I got a call back from the FORD dealership today and they can not give me any straight answers about cost and how long, even with my warranty. Something is a little fishy.....hhhmmmm

  • volengr Jan 18, 2009

Same problem 2 days ago with '05 Expedition...40mph, shuts down with electronic throttle light coming on. Starts back up again after pulling over.

  • pin1 Jan 24, 2009

I have had the same problem and upon restarting the light would go out.  After the last time it went out the check engine light came on and now it will not go out.  How can that light be reset?

  • pin1 Jan 24, 2009

I have had the same problem.  Go to safercar.gov and register a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).  Who knows, if enough of us register complaints maybe they can get Ford to recall since it is definitely a safety concern.

  • mjant Jan 26, 2009

We drive a Ford f-150 and the wrench light came on, truck started shaking, and put the truck in a 'limp home' mode. Any idea what causes this? This needs to have a recall becuase it looks like this is BIG PROBLEM

  • HawkIO Feb 05, 2009

I have a '06 F150- engine shuts down, electronic throttle control light comes on and I coast to the side of the road. I shut the key switch off then it restarts and runs fine.

  • terpfan1 Feb 11, 2009

I have a 2005 Ford Expedition with 42K miles and I was going 30 mph when I lost the gas pedal(power) to my vehicle. Warning light came on and then I pulled to side of road. Lucky I was NOT hit from behind due to losing power to the engine. Turned vehicle off for a few minutes and then turned back on. No warning light and truck ran fine. Took it to Local Apple Ford dealer who for $98 tells me I need to spend another $600 to replace Throttle Body. After a long discussion with Service manager I decided to decline the repair until I contact Ford and National Highway Safety Board.

So far, the truck is still running fine, but I expect it is going to do the same thing again. This is something Ford and/or the Federal Govt should recall before someone gets killed.

Plan to contact Ford and Fed's today...Does anyone have a good e-mail address or internet site for registering complaints?

  • Anonymous Mar 02, 2009

    same

  • SASALBS Mar 05, 2009

I have had the same problem with my 2005 Expedition and it was put on a computer and NO error codes came up. The computer is reporting nothing. I got the same throttle control error message, was travelling at about 55 MPH in morning rush hour traffic on a major highway (DC/Balt) and was lucky not to get slammed into. Vehicle died - I shut it all down, turned the key and fired it back up and it is running fine again. It did the same thing about 5 months ago. Ford shows no recalls but I agree they should be... this is dangerous and someone could get killed.

  • dparkerdawn Mar 30, 2009

I was traveling through our local Stop & Shop parking lot and the check electronic throttle light came on. This is the 4th time it has happened in 3 months. No sooner was I traveling home, when the engine light went on and I got the same message. Everything shut down except the engine. I think Ford needs to look into this. This is a 4 year old car and it definitely is a recall repair that Ford should put out. Someone is going to get seriously hurt.

  • Anonymous Mar 30, 2009

This happened to my wife today. She called me and was scared because she almost got hit. Has anyone heard from Ford yet?

  • AZtruckguy Apr 03, 2009

A quick note for you all:

If your "Check Engine" light stays on, that means that a "hard code" is stored in the vehicle's computer. A herd code is generated when a specific problem, or problems, is/ are sensed by the vehicle's main computer. Take your truck to your local Auto Zone and they will usually scan and obtain the code(s) for you at no charge. From there, you can either keep a list of codes, and make repairs yourself, or build a history of problems to give to your repair shop.

I have an 04 F150 and am experiencing the same problem. My truck died 6 times in ten minutes this afternoon, each time coming to a stop.

  • Anonymous Apr 07, 2009

How many episodes before it becomes a "recall" item?

  • Anonymous Apr 13, 2009

I just spent $550 to repair this same issue.  I was going down the hwy at 60 mph and it just cut off.  That was the third time.  Other two times were around 5-10 mph.

  • Anonymous Apr 15, 2009

I have an 05 Expedition. The check electronic throttle control light comes on, and the truck will not accelerate. I have to coast to the side of the road, turn off the engine, & restart the truck. I travel with 3 small children and I am afraid that we are going to have an accident due to this.

  • erickajoel Apr 17, 2009

I have the same problem. I have a 2005 Ford Expedition, and the Check Electronic Throttle came on twice within a month. I have 2 children, and this is ridiculious. Ford needs to recall the 2005 Ford Expeditions

2005 F150 4.6L engine. truck was staling all the time. Advance Auto Parts read codes: show P0506. Iddle too low. Replaced Thottle control ended my problems. Part cost $ 230.00 + labor. Truck has ONLY 40,000 miles!!!! Ford needs to recal!!!!!

  • zazootg Apr 24, 2009

I've 05 Expedition Limited. Electronic Throttle control light came on and car died". Happened 2 times around 60K miles. Took to Ford dealer in Norco, Ca. Replaced Electronic Throttle system cost $535.00 11/08. Today 4-23-09 67K miles happened gain while driving . The car stopped and Electronic Throttle control light came on and car died. Wait 15 minutes, the car started, enginne light came on but won't run, only run in reverse. I will not buy any Ford again in the future.

We have a 2005 Ford Expedition. This morning when taking my grandaughter to school the "check throttle light came on. The car immediately lost power. I was traveling on a 3-lane highway. Coasted to a stop. After sitting for a few minutes the car started again. Took to Ford dealership and was told it would be $650 to fix. The dealership rep thought there had been a recall for this problem but after checking there had not been a recall. Called Ford Company and was told there was no recall but if we register a complaint it would be forwarded for review. Seems like there have been a lot of complaints on the internet. Has anybody had any luck with Ford? I can say I was scared to death when this happened this morning. Hopefully nobody will be hurt when this happens to them in the middle of a crowded highway.

Hello, I have had the same problem with the 2005 Ford Expedition. I was driving down the road and received a message about checking the electronic throttle. I was driving 50 mph and the engine stopped and so did the power brakes and steering. I have met with an attorney and we are putting together a Class Action Lawsuit against Ford. Please email me at [email protected] if you would like to join the Class Action Suit. Thanks Jason Schmidt

  • Peter De Alwis

I had the ETC light coming on and stalling the engine sometimes when travelling at 80K speed results in no breaks and power steering. Nearly missed a pole one time becuase the road was on a slope. However, when you restart the engine it runs again for few weeks before the same issue pops up. Lately, it has been happening every few days. I had a service booked with a Ford dealer who told me that it is problem with the throttle. However, I took it to my regular mechanic who re-set the vehicle's computer and it is now fixed. In fact he didn't even charge me anything for it.

We ended up taking the vehicle to a trusted auto repair shop. The codes came up indicating a failed throttle body, most likely in the electronics. After a few more pinpoint tests, the recommendation was to replace the throttle body. The cost for this repair was just under $500. Since there is no aftermarket on this part, Genuine Ford parts were used.

Hi.You most likely have a problem with your throttle body itself and might have to replace it.Have the vehicle scanned for codes. It should post a code for the throttle control.

I don't think the Electronic Throttle Body is just a problem in the Expeditions. I have a 06 Explorer and am in the process of getting it replaced with Ford. I will be contacting Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safet Administration regarding this issue.

  • stacybug613 Mar 05, 2012

I am having the same problem I about got killed on the highway in my 2004 ford explorer I thought it was the battery so I bought a new one now a month later it has done the same thing to me again.

I had the same problem with my 2005 expedition, with the 5.4 motor. The solution for mine was to clean out the throttle body really well with a rag and throttle body cleaner. what was going on was that the throttle plate was sticking and therfore was sending a signal and shutting the engine down or into failsafe. good luck, you can do this at home.

It just happened to me today! I was cruising at 65mph entering I-93 N tunnel in boston and my 05 Expedition just died! I have a 14 - month - old baby inside the truck! THIS IS RIDICULOUS and very scary! We could have gotten into an accident! It started back after 10 mins but the engine light remains on. FORD should address this problem!

This problem has been happening to my 05 expedition on and off for about 5 months now. Today's mishap, has me unfortunately HAVING to take it to the dealership. Stalled, started again and now my alternator light is stuck on. I bought an extended warranty till 100k and it's got about 68k on it now. We'll see what happens...

Does anyone have a solution that completly solved the problem?

Solution: Contact Ford. If there is this type of problem with a throttle causing a vehicle to just stop and not accelerate, it should be recalled to fix the throttle. This is dangerous when a car cannot accelerate. The throttle could jam or something on a major highway or something.

Due to the throttle being fully electronic and not cable driven when the tps sensor faults it doesn't send the required signal to the pcm(Computer) and the pcm then thinks the the vehicle is off already due to no signal being received, therefore shutting off the fuel injection pulse killing the motor. To fix this you need to determine which tps sensor is at fault which can be difficult if it's an intermittent fault.
This is on of the common faults found though main not apply to all vehicles with this issue.
The majority of the time it is the tps. Other components that could cause this also would be the electronic pedal, wiring fault or the pcm itself.

I have a 2006 Chrysler 300 and its doing similar things and I read my book and its idling up when in park too long or when I get a certain distance. I took it to this shop and they scanned it and they said it was a leak in the intake or something. The following week they said it was pertaining to the brakes then later its the throttle system. I told them to give me my car and find somebody else to rip off. So its here under the carport needing a real mechanic and I'm trying to get to the solution before it's too late. Who can help me?

I too have a 05 Expedition with the throttle light on. I pulled over and turned the car off. When I turned it back on the warning was gone and the car excelerated as normal. I pass over two train tracks on my way to work. I don't want to take a chance. I'm I to understand that replacing this part doesn't fix the problem? Tired of this car, already replaced the engine!

We too have a 2005 Expedition Limited that is doing the same thing, sometimes it goes months between incidents.
One time the check engine light stayed on, Advance Auto told me the code was 'Throttle Control', so probably the TPS sensor. We purchased a new TPS module from the dealer and installed it ourselves (out of warranty). Within a month or so it did it again, and has done so at idle speed many times and as high as 65mph.
Ford really needs to address this issue, its ridiculous.

First incident and I was almost killed. While crossing a busy intersection, my 2005 Ford Expedition just died as I was making a left. The on comming car could not stop in time....and CRASH....The computer said Throttle Control Module. I had no history but after reading all of the history on this problem, I am going to start a class action case. This is a safety issue and a Ford problem.

Please let us know how things go. You may have a number of people ready to join you in a suit. At the very least Ford needs to find a solution to this problem. This same problem just happened to my wife this morning as she was taking our three young children to school. I'm now scared to death to have her drive them home or anywhere else in that car.

  • Andrea Medina Dec 03, 2010

I just had the same problem this morning with my 05 Limited Expedition, 87k miles. The engine just stopped. I couldn't steer or accelerate. I drive a half hour to work, mostly interstate. Thank goodness this happened just out front of my work where I could coast to park on the street. A local shop ran diagnostics but came up with nothing. And now I find all this online. Hopefully something can be done.

This happened to me as well the other day. 05 Expedition, 88,000 miles on it, luckily i was stopped at a light, Ford said it could be one of four parts, but without the indicator light still on, there is no way of knowing which ones. How about a recall Ford?
Ridiculous. WIll never buy a Ford again after the answers I got from them.

  • Andrea Medina Dec 16, 2010

I took my 05 Expedition in along with print outs of all these comments and from other sites as well. They replaced a fuel sensor claiming it had a hole in it but failed to get ANY codes for any problems with the vehicle so the fuel sensor was their "go to" fix. They noted on the bill that this "fix" did not address the initial problem of the engine shutting down while driving. I asked why they didn't check the throttle control body and their answer was because it didn't code. I asked if they read any of the information I provided and the response was that a hundred or so people commenting online is not cause enough for them to believe that is the cause! I asked what they will say if a few weeks down the road, they're coming to pick me up with the same issue and he dodged the question numerous times. He ended with they can only back up the repair they did, nothing else that may occur and if they don't have a code, there's nothing more they can do! What happened to pride in their work, a desire to fix what's wrong, a curiousity with all these other people having the same problem? NOW, a week later, IT HAPPENED AGAIN while my husband was driving me and our five kids around looking at Christmas lights last night! The message center said CHECK ENGINE THROTTLE CNTRL. We took a picture of it. Will they tell me that because they can't register a code, they still can't fix the problem? I will be contacting FORD as well as NHTSA before I allow the vehicle to be fixed. Someone needs to take responsibility for this issue. Unfortunately, responsibility likely won't happen until people are injured or die. Or maybe it's already happened and we just don't know it?????

I have the same issue as everyone in this post but it is happening with my 2003 Lincoln Navigator. Has anyone found a reliable solution, my truck has shut down 3 times in the last few weeks once while on the interstate I barely made it to the safety lane.

  • Santara99 Dec 21, 2010

Well, I'm another to join the 5.4 cutout conversation. I too have a 2005 Expedition and experience the same problems as everyone else on this blog. It happens mostly when the vehicle is moving and decelerating. The engine power reduces, the dashboard chime rings, the ck electronic throttle control error is illuminated and the engine kills. Seems similar to everybody's experience. I have had it happen after climbing a steep grade on the interstate; the engine decelerates as the vehicle begins it's travel downward, and again the engine goes through the same throttle failure routine. Both experiences are highly dangerous and unacceptable. I am a Ford regular but I will support ANY reasonable action taken to solve this problem at no cost to the customer.

  • captkmk Jan 19, 2011

My wife's 05 expedition started doing the same thing lately and My guy says it the fuel pump module and the electronic throttle control and wants $640.00 for the job. :(
Ford, this will put lives at RISK. RECALL THIS BEFORE SOMEONE DIES FROM when they check the engine and that come's up they will know.

2007 ford explorer xlt v6 first check engine light came on followed by the wrench warning light when shifting into drive now I find cruise control don't work.

Light's on , have a vehicle scan done . Check code's . wrench light on ? .
Wrench Warning Indicator (Base Instrument Cluster)
The instrument cluster receives the powertrain status from the PCM over the HS-CAN. When a powertrain system concern is detected, the PCM sends the instrument cluster a command signal to illuminate the wrench warning indicator. If the 4WD control module detects a failure with the 4WD drive system, the 4WD control module sends a message to the instrument cluster over the CAN to illuminate the wrench warning indicator. On 4.6L engines, if the transmission control module (TCM) detects a failure with the transmission, the TCM sends a message to the instrument cluster over the CAN to illuminate the wrench warning indicator.
Plus The electronic throttle control system can turn on the wrench light.
It should be noted that the ETC system illuminates a powertrain malfunction indicator (wrench) on the instrument cluster when a concern is present. Concerns are accompanied by diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and may also illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).

2007 PCED On Board Diagnostics SECTION 1: Description and Operation Procedure revision date: 08/10/2006 Torque Based Electronic Throttle Control (ETC)
Overview
The torque based ETC is a hardware and software strategy that delivers an engine output torque (via throttle angle) based on driver demand (pedal position). It uses an electronic throttle body, the powertrain control module (PCM), and an accelerator pedal assembly to control the throttle opening and engine torque. The ETC system replaces the standard cable operated accelerator pedal, idle air control (IAC) valve, 3-wire throttle position (TP) sensor, and mechanical throttle body.
Torque based ETC enables aggressive automatic transmission shift schedules (earlier upshifts and later downshifts). This is possible by adjusting the throttle angle to achieve the same wheel torque during shifts, and by calculating this desired torque, the system prevents engine lugging (low RPM and low manifold vacuum) while still delivering the performance and torque requested by the driver. It also enables many fuel economy/emission improvement technologies such as variable camshaft timing (VCT) (deliver same torque during transitions).
Torque based ETC also results in less intrusive vehicle and engine speed limiting, along with smoother traction control.
Other benefits of ETC are:
  • eliminate cruise control actuators
  • eliminate idle air control (IAC) valve
  • better airflow range
  • packaging (no cable)
  • more responsive powertrain at altitude and improved shift quality
It should be noted that the ETC system illuminates a powertrain malfunction indicator (wrench) on the instrument cluster when a concern is present. Concerns are accompanied by diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and may also illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
Electronic Throttle Body (ETB)
The ETB has the following characteristics:
  1. The throttle actuator control (TAC) motor is a DC motor controlled by the PCM (requires 2-wires). The gear ratio from the motor to the throttle plate shaft is 17:1.
  1. There are 2 designs: parallel and in-series. The parallel design has the motor under the bore parallel to the plate shaft. The motor housing is integrated into the main housing. The in-series design has a separate motor housing.
  1. Two springs are used: one is used to close the throttle (main spring) and the other is in a plunger assembly that results in a default angle when no power is applied. This is for limp home reasons (the force of the plunger spring is 2 times stronger than the main spring). The default angle is usually set to result in a top vehicle speed of 48 km/h (30 mph). Typically this throttle angle is 7 to 8 degrees from the hard-stop angle.
  1. The closed throttle plate hard stop is used to prevent the throttle from binding in the bore (~0.75 degree). This hard stop setting is not adjustable and is set to result in less airflow than the minimum engine airflow required at idle.
  1. Unlike cable operated throttle bodies, the intent for the ETB is not to have a hole in the throttle plate or to use plate sealant. The hole is not required in the ETB because the required idle airflow is provided by the plate angle in the throttle body assembly. This plate angle controls idle, idle quality, and eliminates the need for an IAC valve.
  1. The TP sensor has 2 signal circuits in the sensor for redundancy. The redundant throttle position signals are required for increased monitoring reasons. The first TP signal (TP1) has a negative slope (increasing angle, decreasing voltage) and the second signal (TP2) has a positive slope (increasing angle, increasing voltage). During normal operation the negative slope TP signal (TP1) is used by the control strategy as the indication of throttle position. The TP sensor assembly requires 4 circuits.
  • 5-volt reference voltage
  • Signal return (ground)
  • TP1 voltage with negative voltage slope (5-0 volts)
  • TP2 voltage with positive voltage slope (0-5 volts)
Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensors
The ETC strategy uses pedal position sensors as an input to determine the driver demand.
  1. There are 3 pedal position signals required for system monitoring. APP1 has a negative slope (increasing angle, decreasing voltage) and APP2 and APP3 both have a positive slope (increasing angle, increasing voltage). During normal operation APP1 is used as the indication of pedal position by the strategy.
  1. There are 2 VREF circuits, 2 signal return circuits, and 3 signal circuits (a total of 7 circuits and pins) between the PCM and the APP sensor assembly.
  • 2 reference voltage circuits (5 volts)
  • 2 signal return (ground) circuits
  • APP1 voltage with negative voltage slope (5-0 volts)
  • APP2 voltage with positive voltage slope (0-5 volts)
  • APP3 voltage with positive voltage slope (0-5 volts)
  1. The pedal position signal is converted to pedal travel degrees (rotary angle) by the PCM. The software then converts these degrees to counts, which is the input to the torque based strategy.
  1. The 3 pedal position signals make sure the PCM receives a correct input even if 1 signal has a concern. The PCM determines if a signal is incorrect by calculating where it should be, inferred from the other signals. A value is substituted for an incorrect signal if 2 of the 3 signals are incorrect.

Why is my Ford 500 wrench light

Hello!

The computer turns this light on when there is a powertrain malfunction/electronic throttle body system malfunction. It could be the throttle body, computer, wiring or a sensor into the computer used for the throttle body. You will need to scan your computer again when the code is illuminated on the dash. Chances are you will pick up a code when this is done in the computer.
Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) Sensor
The APP sensor is an input to the powertrain control module (PCM) and is used to determine the torque demand. There are 3 pedal position signals in the sensor. Signal 1, APPS1, has a negative slope (increasing angle, decreasing voltage) and signals 2 and 3, APPS2 and APPS3, both have a positive slope (increasing angle, increasing voltage). During normal operation APPS1 is used as the indication of pedal position by the strategy. The 3 pedal position signals make sure the PCM receives a correct input even if 1 signal has a concern. There are 2 reference voltage circuits and 2 signal return circuits for the sensor. For additional information, refer to Torque Based Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) in this section.

It should be noted that the ETC system includes a warning indicator, wrench warning indicator, on the instrument cluster that illuminates when a concern is present. Concerns are accompanied by diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and may also illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).

While starting vehicle ETC warning display vehicle not throttle

This is a warning that something needs to be checked. This happens a lot when a vehicle is jumped with a dead battery. You may have to take to dealer and have ETC reprogramed.
Throttle Control Warning Light More and more vehicles are doing away with the mechanical throttle cable between the driver's foot and the engine throttle body, replacing it with a "drive-by-wire" system. In this system, a throttle pedal sensor sends data to an electronic throttle control computer, which evaluates and relays the throttle request to a specialized electronic throttle motor on the engine throttle body.
The throttle motor opens or closes the actual throttle blade, which increases or decreases the power output of the engine. The throttle control warning light illuminates when a problem is detected in the electronic throttle system.
