I was driving at 60 MPH when the warning signal sounded and the information panel said "electronic throttle control" as I was pulling over, the car engine shut off. No power to the engine after that. Lights worked, but no power came to the engine. What is wrong with it?
We ended up taking the vehicle to a trusted auto repair shop. The codes came up indicating a failed throttle body, most likely in the electronics. After a few more pinpoint tests, the recommendation was to replace the throttle body. The cost for this repair was just under $500. Since there is no aftermarket on this part, Genuine Ford parts were used.
Hi.You most likely have a problem with your throttle body itself and might have to replace it.Have the vehicle scanned for codes.It should post a code for the throttle control.
My husband was driving 60mph when he also experienced the same problem electronic trottle control when on and he almost got killed at the 10w freeway a semi almost slam into him engine turn of and was in the 2nd lane. Someone is going to get kill if nothing is being done. This is a recall no doubt...

I don't think the Electronic Throttle Body is just a problem in the Expeditions. I have a 06 Explorer and am in the process of getting it replaced with Ford. I will be contacting Ford and the National Highway Traffic Safet Administration regarding this issue.
I had the same problem with my 2005 expedition, with the 5.4 motor. The solution for mine was to clean out the throttle body really well with a rag and throttle body cleaner. what was going on was that the throttle plate was sticking and therfore was sending a signal and shutting the engine down or into failsafe. good luck, you can do this at home.

It just happened to me today! I was cruising at 65mph entering I-93 N tunnel in boston and my 05 Expedition just died! I have a 14 - month - old baby inside the truck! THIS IS RIDICULOUS and very scary! We could have gotten into an accident! It started back after 10 mins but the engine light remains on. FORD should address this problem!
This problem has been happening to my 05 expedition on and off for about 5 months now. Today's mishap, has me unfortunately HAVING to take it to the dealership. Stalled, started again and now my alternator light is stuck on. I bought an extended warranty till 100k and it's got about 68k on it now. We'll see what happens...

Solution: Contact Ford. If there is this type of problem with a throttle causing a vehicle to just stop and not accelerate, it should be recalled to fix the throttle. This is dangerous when a car cannot accelerate. The throttle could jam or something on a major highway or something.
This also happened to me on a 2010 ford f-150
Due to the throttle being fully electronic and not cable driven when the tps sensor faults it doesn't send the required signal to the pcm(Computer) and the pcm then thinks the the vehicle is off already due to no signal being received, therefore shutting off the fuel injection pulse killing the motor. To fix this you need to determine which tps sensor is at fault which can be difficult if it's an intermittent fault.
This is on of the common faults found though main not apply to all vehicles with this issue.
The majority of the time it is the tps. Other components that could cause this also would be the electronic pedal, wiring fault or the pcm itself.
I have a 2006 Chrysler 300 and its doing similar things and I read my book and its idling up when in park too long or when I get a certain distance. I took it to this shop and they scanned it and they said it was a leak in the intake or something. The following week they said it was pertaining to the brakes then later its the throttle system. I told them to give me my car and find somebody else to rip off. So its here under the carport needing a real mechanic and I'm trying to get to the solution before it's too late. Who can help me?

Check electronic throttle control light came on what is the problem??
I too have a 05 Expedition with the throttle light on. I pulled over and turned the car off. When I turned it back on the warning was gone and the car excelerated as normal. I pass over two train tracks on my way to work. I don't want to take a chance. I'm I to understand that replacing this part doesn't fix the problem? Tired of this car, already replaced the engine!

We too have a 2005 Expedition Limited that is doing the same thing, sometimes it goes months between incidents.
One time the check engine light stayed on, Advance Auto told me the code was 'Throttle Control', so probably the TPS sensor. We purchased a new TPS module from the dealer and installed it ourselves (out of warranty). Within a month or so it did it again, and has done so at idle speed many times and as high as 65mph.
Ford really needs to address this issue, its ridiculous.
First incident and I was almost killed. While crossing a busy intersection, my 2005 Ford Expedition just died as I was making a left. The on comming car could not stop in time....and CRASH....The computer said Throttle Control Module. I had no history but after reading all of the history on this problem, I am going to start a class action case. This is a safety issue and a Ford problem.
Please let us know how things go. You may have a number of people ready to join you in a suit. At the very least Ford needs to find a solution to this problem. This same problem just happened to my wife this morning as she was taking our three young children to school. I'm now scared to death to have her drive them home or anywhere else in that car.
I just had the same problem this morning with my 05 Limited Expedition, 87k miles. The engine just stopped. I couldn't steer or accelerate. I drive a half hour to work, mostly interstate. Thank goodness this happened just out front of my work where I could coast to park on the street. A local shop ran diagnostics but came up with nothing. And now I find all this online. Hopefully something can be done.
This happened to me as well the other day. 05 Expedition, 88,000 miles on it, luckily i was stopped at a light, Ford said it could be one of four parts, but without the indicator light still on, there is no way of knowing which ones. How about a recall Ford?
Ridiculous. WIll never buy a Ford again after the answers I got from them.
I took my 05 Expedition in along with print outs of all these comments and from other sites as well. They replaced a fuel sensor claiming it had a hole in it but failed to get ANY codes for any problems with the vehicle so the fuel sensor was their "go to" fix. They noted on the bill that this "fix" did not address the initial problem of the engine shutting down while driving. I asked why they didn't check the throttle control body and their answer was because it didn't code. I asked if they read any of the information I provided and the response was that a hundred or so people commenting online is not cause enough for them to believe that is the cause! I asked what they will say if a few weeks down the road, they're coming to pick me up with the same issue and he dodged the question numerous times. He ended with they can only back up the repair they did, nothing else that may occur and if they don't have a code, there's nothing more they can do! What happened to pride in their work, a desire to fix what's wrong, a curiousity with all these other people having the same problem? NOW, a week later, IT HAPPENED AGAIN while my husband was driving me and our five kids around looking at Christmas lights last night! The message center said CHECK ENGINE THROTTLE CNTRL. We took a picture of it. Will they tell me that because they can't register a code, they still can't fix the problem? I will be contacting FORD as well as NHTSA before I allow the vehicle to be fixed. Someone needs to take responsibility for this issue. Unfortunately, responsibility likely won't happen until people are injured or die. Or maybe it's already happened and we just don't know it?????
I have the same issue as everyone in this post but it is happening with my 2003 Lincoln Navigator. Has anyone found a reliable solution, my truck has shut down 3 times in the last few weeks once while on the interstate I barely made it to the safety lane.
Well, I'm another to join the 5.4 cutout conversation. I too have a 2005 Expedition and experience the same problems as everyone else on this blog. It happens mostly when the vehicle is moving and decelerating. The engine power reduces, the dashboard chime rings, the ck electronic throttle control error is illuminated and the engine kills. Seems similar to everybody's experience. I have had it happen after climbing a steep grade on the interstate; the engine decelerates as the vehicle begins it's travel downward, and again the engine goes through the same throttle failure routine. Both experiences are highly dangerous and unacceptable. I am a Ford regular but I will support ANY reasonable action taken to solve this problem at no cost to the customer.
My wife's 05 expedition started doing the same thing lately and My guy says it the fuel pump module and the electronic throttle control and wants $640.00 for the job. :(
Ford, this will put lives at RISK. RECALL THIS BEFORE SOMEONE DIES FROM when they check the engine and that come's up they will know.

I had the exact same problem with my 2005 Expedition traveling at 40 mph.  After an hour, car started fine and I drove to a ford dealer for service.  The truck was scanned and no problems were noted.  The dealer's service dept recommends replacement of the throttle housing to correct problem.
My 2005 Ford Expedition has the same problem. Took it to the local dealership and was told that it may have been some moisture and probably would never happen again. In the last months it has done it several times. Dealership says this is about a $700 repair! Sounds like this problem is common to this make and model. Is this a complicated repair?
Has anyone actually got this problem fixed and what was the outcome? Is replacing the throttle housing a pretty big job? Can a noobie like me do it myself? Please help
Will removing the positive battery cable reset the computer and allow the sensor to reset?
I was pulling out into traffic and the electronic throttle signal came on and the car would to rev or move. I cut the car aff and it would not start for several min.
I was driving about 40MPH when the Message Center tone sounded and the message read "Check Throttle Control". The engine continued to run, however, the accelerator became inoperable. We managed to limp to a side street where I shifted into "park" and switched the ignition switch to "off". I checked under the hood to no avail. Then depressed the accelerator 2-3 times. After about 5-8 minutes, restarted the engine and depressed the accelerator slightly and the engine revved. I shifted into drive and took the vehicle back home.
The vehicle seems to operating fine, but we're just uneasy that this will occur again. Has this problem been occuring with other folks? Has anyone else came up with a solution?
Same problem here, quoted $595.00 for the repair from a ford dealership.
Sad thing is I was sold a Ford ESP Warranty, and they stated this throttle issue is not covered under my extended plan. Absurd.

I have a 2005 Ford Eddie Bauer 4X4 Expedition. Without warning, I had no acceleration . I coasted to the side of the road and turned the vehicle off. I looked in the manual for electronic throttle control code and then turned the vehicle on . It has been fine since but it is unnerving to think it could happen again.

I have had the same problem with my 2005 expedition. It actually just happened this morning on my way into work. Thankfully I was right by a gas station and pulled over, turned the car off and back on and it ran fine, but it is still really scarry when it happens.I don't understand why there isn't a recall on this for the 05 Expedition yet? It seems as if a lot of 05 Expedition owners are having the same problem. I am definitely going to go to Ford and say something, because this is just way to dangerous to drive with this issue. I never drive in the middle lane on highways now for fear that this could happen at any time.
I bought my truck brand new from ford, so I have never had to worry about what a previous owner did to the vehicle. I always take it in to my mechanic for it's regular maintenance. The first time this happened to me my truck only had maybe 20000 miles on it, no reason for there to be any mechanical issues.
This happened in my 05 Expedition for the first time; ~50,000 miles on it. Â I was using cruise control at 55 mph, and the car gradually accelerated to about 70 on it's own. Â When I touched the brake, the cruise disengaged and the 'check electronic throttle control' led message appeared. Â I had trouble maintaining speed, the engine was working but seemed to be running rough until I could slow down, pull off and park. Â Â It continued to idle, and didn't sound different. Â When I opened the hood, I heard a clicking sound, but I don't know if that was unusual or not. Â I stopped the engine, restarted the car, and continued on my trip with no more problems yet. Â I agree this should be a recall item.Â
samd thing - 2005 Ford Expedition EB doing 65 on hwy when signal sounded and check "electrical throttle" came up. Power died as I pulled onto shoulder (inside of highway). Waited a few minutes then was able to restart engine but light remains on.
I just encountered this problem today, while driving down the highway at 55 mph. It is not covered under my warranty, FORD has too know this is a issue and within one month so many owners of 05 Expeditions are experiencing this. I am call FORD!
Does anyone have any idea how the throttle body can fail? I have the same problem, but I do not understand what can fail on the throttle body. I can see the throttle postion sensor. trying to fix without involving dealer. Any help is appreciated.

I was wondering the same thing. I was with my son picking up my other son from pre-k and I was in the left hand turn lane. I was coasting and I went to step on the gas and it would NOT go. I turned on my blinker immediately and crossed 3 lanes of traffic so I could pull over. Thank God people slowed down otherwise we would have been in a wreck on top of the "throttle"issue. My truck was still running but when you hit the gan NOTHING would happen and that same warning abouth the throttle came on. LUCKILY I have an extended warranty but as all of you I am at 50,000 miles and this is happening. I got a call back from the FORD dealership today and they can not give me any straight answers about cost and how long, even with my warranty. Something is a little fishy.....hhhmmmm

I have had the same problem. Â Go to safercar.gov and register a complaint with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Â Who knows, if enough of us register complaints maybe they can get Ford to recall since it is definitely a safety concern.

I have a 2005 Ford Expedition with 42K miles and I was going 30 mph when I lost the gas pedal(power) to my vehicle. Warning light came on and then I pulled to side of road. Lucky I was NOT hit from behind due to losing power to the engine. Turned vehicle off for a few minutes and then turned back on. No warning light and truck ran fine. Took it to Local Apple Ford dealer who for $98 tells me I need to spend another $600 to replace Throttle Body. After a long discussion with Service manager I decided to decline the repair until I contact Ford and National Highway Safety Board.
So far, the truck is still running fine, but I expect it is going to do the same thing again. This is something Ford and/or the Federal Govt should recall before someone gets killed.

I have had the same problem with my 2005 Expedition and it was put on a computer and NO error codes came up. The computer is reporting nothing. I got the same throttle control error message, was travelling at about 55 MPH in morning rush hour traffic on a major highway (DC/Balt) and was lucky not to get slammed into. Vehicle died - I shut it all down, turned the key and fired it back up and it is running fine again. It did the same thing about 5 months ago. Ford shows no recalls but I agree they should be... this is dangerous and someone could get killed.
I was traveling through our local Stop & Shop parking lot and the check electronic throttle light came on. This is the 4th time it has happened in 3 months. No sooner was I traveling home, when the engine light went on and I got the same message. Everything shut down except the engine. I think Ford needs to look into this. This is a 4 year old car and it definitely is a recall repair that Ford should put out. Someone is going to get seriously hurt.

A quick note for you all:
If your "Check Engine" light stays on, that means that a "hard code" is stored in the vehicle's computer. A herd code is generated when a specific problem, or problems, is/ are sensed by the vehicle's main computer. Take your truck to your local Auto Zone and they will usually scan and obtain the code(s) for you at no charge. From there, you can either keep a list of codes, and make repairs yourself, or build a history of problems to give to your repair shop.
I have an 04 F150 and am experiencing the same problem. My truck died 6 times in ten minutes this afternoon, each time coming to a stop.

2005 F150 4.6L engine. truck was staling all the time. Advance Auto Parts read codes: show P0506. Iddle too low. Replaced Thottle control ended my problems. Part cost $ 230.00 + labor. Truck has ONLY 40,000 miles!!!! Ford needs to recal!!!!!

Replaced Electronic Throttle system cost $535.00 11/08. Today 4-23-09 67K miles happened gain while driving . The car stopped and Electronic Throttle control light came on and car died. Wait 15 minutes, the car started, enginne light came on but won't run, only run in reverse. I will not buy any Ford again in the future.
We have a 2005 Ford Expedition. This morning when taking my grandaughter to school the "check throttle light came on. The car immediately lost power. I was traveling on a 3-lane highway. Coasted to a stop. After sitting for a few minutes the car started again. Took to Ford dealership and was told it would be $650 to fix. The dealership rep thought there had been a recall for this problem but after checking there had not been a recall. Called Ford Company and was told there was no recall but if we register a complaint it would be forwarded for review. Seems like there have been a lot of complaints on the internet. Has anybody had any luck with Ford? I can say I was scared to death when this happened this morning. Hopefully nobody will be hurt when this happens to them in the middle of a crowded highway.
Hello, I have had the same problem with the 2005 Ford Expedition. I was driving down the road and received a message about checking the electronic throttle. I was driving 50 mph and the engine stopped and so did the power brakes and steering. I have met with an attorney and we are putting together a Class Action Lawsuit against Ford. I had the ETC light coming on and stalling the engine sometimes when travelling at 80K speed results in no breaks and power steering. Nearly missed a pole one time becuase the road was on a slope. However, when you restart the engine it runs again for few weeks before the same issue pops up. Lately, it has been happening every few days. I had a service booked with a Ford dealer who told me that it is problem with the throttle. However, I took it to my regular mechanic who re-set the vehicle's computer and it is now fixed. In fact he didn't even charge me anything for it.
