Possible that the buttons are sticking or there is a switch failure on the panel which has made this to be caught in postion. If you are not able to use force to change then it can be that the button is stuck along with the base, use of a degreasing spray can help. Try using WD 40 . If not remove this panel and try before we can think of replacing.
The S stands for "Sport" mode. It turns on the turbo. When this button is pressed, you will have a higher torque; the gears will change at a higher torque also.
The W stands for "Winter" mode. It allows for a slower takeoff during winter/icy conditions. When this button is pressed, the engine will automatically start on second gear preventing slipping and fish-tailing.
I had the similar problem after changing out the waterpump and timing belt, came to find out it was the battery cable connectors needed cleaning. simply use a wire brush and clean the inside of the connector before connecting it to the battery terminal post. When you have insufficient voltage going to your electrical components, it will tend to chatter(relays). This was the first symptoms i had with my passport, but once i cleaned the cable connector to the battery post, it started right up,problem fixed. I hope this helps. 2kpassport.
