I agree completely with Michael Masters with one acception: Some faults, like erratic speed sensor input to the Body Control Module can cause "Limp-In Mode". Also, there are some ABS and/or Traction Control codes that can cause this. these types of codes CANNOT be retrieved for FREE using the generic OBD code readers at the auto parts places. These will require a full computer NETWORK scan using a scan tool that can access body controls, IPC data, ABS data, etc. The "free" way is worth a shot, but if they tell you there are no codes, then you need to take it to a professional technician that can provide a FULL scan.
HI. This may be an inducement of limp mode by the engine computer to heel any further damage that may occur at this point. The best actions at this point is to have the engine computer(PCM/ECM), scanned for any codes that may be stored at this time. This will allow you to expose the actual problems that may exist within the sensory system of the vehicle, as well as, possible transmission issues such as shift solenoid faults.
These engine scans can be done at your local auto-zone auto parts store for no charge, or you can purchase a scanner and administer yourself. Kindly post the codes as soon as possible for an accurate solution.
Todays trans are electronic like mentioned--also some cars have downloads to cure this problem-contact the maker--cud hav service bullitins too--a scan with a data stream is gettin more popular
