When you disconnect the battery, it causes the anti-theft system pairing to break. On reconnecting the battery, the key and transponder chip need re-pairing. There are some ideas in the link, but with a BMW your best bet is to call a mobile auto-electrician or an auto locksmith. They both have pro grade scan tool computers that can reset the anti-theft system and diagnose any other electrical issues.
try to gnd the engine and the body of the car and start the engine if the engine cranks than change the engine ground strap that could be corroded . if not than you will need to check the starter motor.
try removing the spark plugs to ensure that you do not have a hydraulic lock in a combustion chamber. This happens when a crack or faulty head gasket allows water into the chamber and when the piston comes up it is prevented from going over the top of the stroke. Removing the plugs allows the water to come out and the engine to spin.
Alternator. Have it tested with a voltmeter while on the car and running. Or take it off and have it tested. The current to run the car and the accessories is from the alternator when the engine is running. The battery light coming on alerts you that the alternator is not doing its job.
Come on give us more information. Think if you were trying to fix your own problem and you had to explain the problem to someone else with exactly no knowledge of what's going on.
1st off....a key with bad electronics and reader will open the door and that's it.
So that being said does the key turn the engine? If so the key, the program and ecu are ok. Say the engine cranks but doesn't start. Fuel pump. unscrew the access plug on the fuel rail and see if any fuel squirts out. NO......don't ever do this when it's hot..........not that yours is because it doesn't run but I had to say that. The millisecond you turn your key over to get it to try to start...the fuel pump comes on and pressurizes the entire fuel system.
Got fuel pressure, the engine turns but still no start= ignition spark plug engine computer problems.
The battery could still be bad and if you don't have a totally good battery in the car it won't run right. Take to one of the parts stores and they can check it for you for free. Probably as simple as a battery.
Possibly. 1st have the battery checked though. Pull it out and have a parts store check it (free service). All the lights may work, but the battery may not have enough 'juice' to crank the engine over. Is there a click, or no sound at all? Check terminals and connection at starter also to make sure all are clean and tight. If battery checks out as fully charged and ok, then pull the starter and have it checked out. Good luck.
