The check engine light is on because the computer has detected a problem. Not all "problems" cause a "drivability" issue so without knowing the code(s), there is no way of knowing what the problem/fix is. May just be a loose gas cap, or something more serious. You need to have the code(s) retrieved. It takes an OBD II code reader, and in some states your local auto parts store will do it for free. teh code scanner will also be able to "reset" the light once the problem is fixed.
You can disconnect the battery for 15 minutes and it will clear any codes in the computer, but if any problems still exist, it will come back on.
