Question about 1990 Chevrolet C1500

1 Answer

I have a 1990 Chevy Silverado with the 5.0 V8. Sometimes it is hard to start and once it is started it does not like to sit and idle. After running a while it will idle and smooth out. When I drive it, it surges and basically has no power what so ever. Sometimes if you push the gas to the floor it will sputter and smooth out and take off, but thats rare for it. Could it be a weak fuel pump? or what other issues could it be?

yes sounds like the fuel filter is clogged when push gas pedal put it in clear flood mood and resets the fuel system and starts over thats why it starts when push to floor creates back pressure sucks debri bottom of filter

When was the last time you changed the air filter ?? Do you pour a bottle of fuel injector cleaner once a month into the fuel tank ?? Clogged dirty fuel injectors will give the symptoms you describe.

A common problem is if the fuel pressure regulator leaks internally. This causes fuel pressure to bleed down over time and makes it hard to start the vehicle if it has been sitting for usually more than a few hours. Sounds like that could be what you are dealing with.

If there is little or no vacuum going to the engine at time of start up that will cause the engine to be hard starting, what it does is since theres not much vacuum if dumps crazy amounts of fuel into the cylinders to aid in starting, also would cause it to run funky for a few seconds after its started

Hard start and rough idle.

Sounds like it's time for a tune up of the ignition system. That would be easiest. If not, have a mechanic check your cylinder compression.
