My 4 cyl auto 96 rav4 started shaking on slow acceleration one day out of the blue by that night the engine light came on it got so sluggish the only way to get home was to drive in reverse....works beautifully backwards but eill only roll and rev in any other gears. you can notice the shift into park and neutral and the car actually lurches noticeably when it slides into reverse! i really hope its not a transmiossion problem as i've just bought it and spent more than i could afford..can anyone please offer some suggestionsz. thanx

SOURCE: how to use the overdrive on the auto.transmission.

the overdrive button on your automatic transmission is for cruising on the highway basically like having another gear for better economy careful not to use it when your not on the highway because lugging the car in overdrive when its not needed will cause higher fuel consumption other than that you should have no problems just get out on the highway and push and away you go

SOURCE: I changed the gear box of my 2007 corolla about 5

A delay of more than a second in shifting from the neutral to drive or reverse gear, could mean that there is a problem with the transmission. If on changing from a neutral or park position to the drive or reverse gear, the car does not immediately catch the gear and move forward or backward, then it could mean a problem in the transmission. If you change gears, and you hear a sudden clunk or sudden jolt or shudder, then the shifting is not smooth and there could be a problem with the gearbox. If the engine rpm keeps increasing but there is no increase in the speed, then it could be a sign of the transmission slipping. Most automatic transmission systems, nowadays, have a check engine light or an OD light, which flashes if there is a problem with the engine.

Check engine light is on, any speed above 30mph it gives a flashing check engine light, acceleration feels bogged down, engine idle is rough and shakes the truck

I'm guessing you have over 100000 miles , definitely replace all the spark plugs and ignition cables and cap and rotor if your motor is such equipped. If you want a better idea of which cylinders are misfiring, go to your local Checker or Autozone and ask them for code retrieval, codes stored will give you an idea of what is failing. Code po300 is multiple misfire, po301 is cyl #1, po302 is cyl #2 and so forth.

Try to pull any ECM codes that may be related , a local Checker or Auto zone might help with code retrieval.

The engine light on my 96 merc cougar XR7 is on. Car shakes bad when i accelerate and engine light begins to blink. I'm embaressed to say my engine light has been on for sometime but was told it c

The check engine light needs to be addressed. Yes it could be a sensor but you need to know.
The light blinking means the problem is serious, such as a dead miss on one or more cylinders. The light being on means something is happening with the engine performance that could damage the catalytic converter.
Get the computer scanned - most auto parts stores will do it for free in hopes of selling you some parts. Once you have the codes research them online or here.

Standard transmission, clutch is worn out, starting point for you with so little information to work with

My 2001 Ford Taurus SES all of the sudden started to shake horribly. It does so when in idle AND when attempting to drive. I drove it to work one day and no issues, no noises, no rough idle, no hard...

. The answer is to replace all the spark plugs and wires. Even if the plug appears fine to the ***** eye, and the wire has no visible damage, there could be problems with it that cause it not to fire properly. if you have coils on it, check them also.
An ignition coil that is failing will still provide current to the plugs, but it might not be enough for a full spark and the car will run sluggishly. If the current being provided by the coil isn't consistent, the car will run rough. make sure your getting good spark from coil first. good-day !

My car was running beautifully, had a oil change and filters change, again drove beautifully for 3 days, then overnight, it starts great, but shakes between 5mph-25 mph, and is sluggish when i take off...

Have your fuel filter changed, your fuel filter may be at the end of it's life time and is dirty. The fuel filter should be replaced every 15,000 miles or once a year to ensure that the fuel system is running at 100%. Try that first and if there is an Auto Zone around your area, have the car scanned for the DTC codes. Auto Zone scan free of charge and can give you the recommended steps to addressing the issue that is causing your engine problem. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help you get your car running 100% again soon.

I need help badly.

Good Day,

The shaking can be caused by a bad motor mount, but could also be caused from the engine when it is idle'ing low and about to stall. The motor mount would also shake the car under braking, so if is doesn't shake whiIe your braking it's probably not motor mount, Is your check engine light? The idle air is another possibilty among other things. I can assist further but I need to know which engine you have the 4 cyl 2.0L or 6.0 cyl 2.5L?

Let me know about the check engine light aswell.

Hope this helps
