Hello, This defect means your torque converter is switched on and not disengaging.
This can be a toggle type switch or the torque converter Lock-up is stuck.

I service mostly Ford family Brands and not GM, everyone has their own way to do stuff. I can tell you that the Torque converter is deeply embedded between the engine and trans and it would make sense to have the controls for it accessible from outside. Your PCM (Powertrain Control Module) may be at fault, save for any toggle relays inbetween the PCM and the Torque Converter. Sometimes shift points and other information can be "Flashed" or reprogrammed with a Dealer computer. This is a different device than just a scanner that reads your Trouble Codes.

At least you can ask about repairing this problem and pricing info and pick your best spot. I looked under the NHTSA Website for you and there was no mention of repeated problems like yours for your specific vehicle.

You can ask at a good Autoparts store if there is a "Torque Converter Lock-Up" switch for your trans and proceed from there. A GM Expert at this site may be able to help you more than I can, but you can try my info and see what happens.

My 2002 gmc wont shift and code p1870 came up it will stay im low gear

You can replace the transmission valve body as per the instruction or install a new TCC apply valve kit. However the installation requires for the valve body to be removed and honed out by a special tool. I wouldn't recommend this procedure unless you have the proper tools and the know how about the inner workings of the automatic transmissions.

#01-07-30-023B: Harsh 1-2 Upshift, SES, MIL, or CEL Illuminated, DTC P1870 Set (Replace Valve Body) - (Mar 22, 2002)
Subject: Harsh 1-2 Upshift, SES, MIL, or CEL Illuminated, DTC P1870 Set (Replace Valve Body)
Models: 1996 Buick Roadmaster
1996 Cadillac Fleetwood
1999-2000 Cadillac Escalade
1996-2000 Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette
1996-2000 Pontiac Firebird
1996-2000 Chevrolet and GMC Light Duty Truck Models
1996-2000 Oldsmobile Bravada
with 4L60-E Automatic Transmission (RPO M30)
Built Prior to January 15, 2000 (Julian Date 0015)

This bulletin is being revised to update VIN Breakpoint Date information and revise the Parts Information table. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 01-07-30-023A (Section 07 -- Transmission/Transaxle).

Condition: Some customers may comment on a harsh 1-2 upshift and the Check Engine Light or Service Engine Soon indicator is illuminated.

Diagnosis: Typically, these vehicles will have been driven more than 32,000 km (20,000 mi) before this condition occurs.

The scan tool may show a DTC P1870 set as a history code.

A harsh 1-2 shift or DTC P1870, caused by wear in the control valve body, may be difficult to duplicate when the transmission temperature is below 93°C (200°F).

Cause: The condition may be due to wear in the control valve body. This wear occurs in the bore that contains the TCC isolator and regulator valves, and results in poor, or no, TCC apply.

Important:
• DTC P1870 is a type B code. The conditions for setting the P1870 DTC must occur on TWO CONSECUTIVE TRIPS (ignition cycles, with a drive cycle) before setting a P1870 history code.
• When the conditions for setting DTC P1870 are met (first trip), the PCM commands maximum line pressure and harsh 1-2 shifts are the result.
• This may result in a harsh 1-2 shift with no history code if the conditions for setting the DTC required for the second trip are not met, on two consecutive trips (Ignition cycles, with a drive cycle).
• When the conditions for setting the DTC are met, on the second consecutive trip, a DTC P1870 is stored as a history code.
• When the P1870 code is stored, the PCM will turn on the Service Engine Soon (SES), Check Engine Light (CEL), or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL).

Correction: Install a control valve body with the revised TCC regulator and isolator valves. Refer to the Parts Information table below. These valves are used in all transmissions produced after January 15, 2000 (Julian Date 0015), and all of the service parts currently available through GMSPO contain revised TCC regulator and isolator valves.

Important: If all of the following conditions are true, it is not necessary to rebuild the transmission or to replace additional transmission components beyond the control valve body.
• Transmission operation is normal before the transmission reaches operating temperature, or before DTC P1870 is set (no slips, flares, or missing gears).
• The torque converter is not blue or overheated.
• The transmission fluid is not burned or has no burned odor.
• The transmission fluid pan contains no abnormal debris (clutch material, bronze, brass, or metal fragments).

1999 Buick Park Ave Ultra Service Engine Light Code #P0742

The code PO742 indicates the torque converter clutch is stuck on.
The torque converter is what connects the engine to the transmission.
It engages and disengages according to signals from the pcm, to aid in
smooth shifting. There are a couple of things you can try. make sure trans. fluid is full, if thats ok check the 20 pin connector, located on left
side of car on top of transmission bell housing. Make sure there's no
corrosion or bent pins. If this clears the code your all set, if not you may
want to ask your mechanic and see what he/she recomends.
Hope this helps.
Good luck

What is code 1811 on 2000 buick centryclunks into gear AFTER 25 TO 30 MILES . TRANMISION PEOPLE SAY THAT THE TRANMISION NEED REPLACEING

Hi,

Condition

Some owners of the above vehicles with a Hydra-Matic 4T65-E transaxle may comment on harsh upshifts or harsh garage shifts, soft shifts, shudders on hard acceleration, or shifts erratic. These conditions may appear intermittently or set a DTC P1811 or P0748. During diagnosis, a low or high line pressure (actual versus desired) may be observed.

Cause

The above condition may be due to any one of the following which may affect line pressure output:
• Sediment inside the pressure control (PC) solenoid valve, causing the PC solenoid valve to mechanically bind. • Sediment in the valve body, causing the torque signal regulator valve to stick. • Incorrect transaxle oil level.
To verifiy the exact failure, a line pressure check will need to be performed.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks.

Buick rendezvous 2003

DTC P1361
If the PCM does not monitor IC pulses while IC mode spark advance is commanded DTC P1361 sets.
Observe the Freeze Frame/Failure Records for this DTC.
Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds.
Start the engine.
Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records.
Did the DTC fail this ignition?
Is DTC P1362 also set?
--
YES - Go to Step 6
Turn OFF the ignition.
Disconnect the ICM.
Probe the IC timing control circuit at the PCM with a test lamp connected to battery voltage.
Does the test lamp illuminate?

The ignition control module (ICM) has independent power and ground circuits. The circuits between the ICM and the powertrain control module (PCM) consist of the following circuits:

• The ignition control (IC) timing signal circuit
• The IC timing control circuit
• The low-resolution engine speed signal circuit
• A low reference signal circuit
The ICM sends 3X signals to the PCM. The ICM controls the timing advance during engine cranking. The timing advance changes to PCM control after the following actions:
• The PCM receives the second 3X signal.
• The PCM applies 5 volts to the IC timing signal circuit.
• The timing advance switches to PCM control.
• If the PCM detects a short to voltage in the IC timing signal circuit DTC P1362 sets.

The transmission pressure is modified by an adaptive modifier which controls the shift execution time. This diagnostic tests the time required to accomplish the shift. If the shift takes longer than 0.65 seconds and the adaptive modifier cannot shorten this time, then a counter increases by one.
If the PCM detects a counter value of 2 during one trip, then DTC P1811 sets. DTC P1811 is a type C DTC.
Diagnostic Aids
• Ask the customer about possible overloading, exceeding the trailer towing limit, or towing in overdrive.
• Ensure that the current PCM calibration is correct for the final drive ratio.

DTC C0035-C0051
As the wheel spins, the wheel speed sensor produces an AC signal. The electronic brake control module (EBCM) uses the frequency of the AC signal to calculate the wheel speed.
