I have a 2005 Dodge Neon SXT with an automatic transmission. The mileage is 137,774. I have a very concerning issue with the AT and I'll try to describe the issue the best I can. The car shudders quite severely at a stop while it is in gear. If I put the vehicle in neutral the shudder stops. Once it's back in gear it reappears. The vehicle runs a lot louder than it usually has even at freeway speeds because of this issue. Secondly, the vehicle has been having a very difficult time shifting up through the gears when the weather is cold. It also happens in warm weather but not as often as colder weather. Sometimes it won't shift up at all unless I back off the throttle and try accelerating again. I have a hunch that the vehicle also has problems going into overdrive but I cannot duplicate the problem. The transmission has no problem shifting down and once the transmission is in a certain gear, it has no problems staying in that gear. I have also shifted manually through the gears and everything seems to work fine until it's back shifting automatically. The transmission fluid has been flushed, the filter has been changed regularly and the fluid level is good but the issue still stays. The engine light has never illuminated by this issue and no transmission fault codes have ever been seen. Because of this I can only describe the symptoms of the problem. Thank you very much for your time and I hope you may be able to shed some light on this issue.

Your torque converter lock up is defective, it is not turning off. I would replace the torque converter lock up solenoid first and change the fluid and filter, if that is not the fix the transmission will need to come out for rebuilding and the torque converter replaced most likely..

SOURCE: When my 95 Dodge Neon

You need to free up your throttle pressure control cable linkage that sits above your shift cable linkage at the top of your transaxle on drivers side. I had the same problem from time to time, caused it to stay in lower gear longer, and shift down hard when slowing down. Happened more when I drove it a little harder as pushing gas pedal further down causes it to rotate, but then sticks & doesn't come back right a way. Free it up with penetrating lube first, then put a good coat of spray grease like white lithium after its moving freely again, and it should be problem free for a while. You may have to move some things to get at it. If you need a picture email ([email protected]), seeing how I can't seem to figure out how to send it from here.

sounds like you should start by dropping the pan and changing the filter, put cheap fluid in it or reuse the old fluid if its not too bad bring it to a shop and have a transmission flush performed with a good flush machine your valve body is sticking and this should clear things up please rate -jeff

SOURCE: Car shudders when accelerating...

My wife's 02 Audi A4 1,8t had the same problem after talking with Audi (coil pack/spark plugs) we replaced them all and the problem still persisted not to say that won't fix your problem but what I found to be the problem was 3/8 vacuum line (shaped like a S) that comes up on the right hand side between the oil filter and the fire wall that comes from the turbo check valve assembly (its hard to locate and should be done with the engine cool) up to a valve assembly that connects to the intake manifold, what was happening was the hose would become spongy at the bottom (you will have to squeeze the hose from top to bottom to notice the difference) and as the engine heats up it would cause the hose to collapse. Once I replaced the hose and the computer reprogrammed the fuel mixture (about 25 miles of driving) the problem seems to have been correct. Good luck.I had also replaced the turbo check valve about three years ago because of a severe hesitation when you first apply gas (turbo check valve may not be the proper name.) Sorry. Reverse wont work on an incline and barely work on level ground?

Misty, if automatic check the transmission fluid level and top up if necessary. Take into a good shop for diagnoses(codes) and estimate on repair if needed. Could be transmission valve body or other internal problem causing pressure loss, maybe solenoid issue.

2005 dodge neon sxt, doesn't want to start or stay running once I get it started. replace cam sensor, crankshaft sensor, knock sensor, fuel pump and had a tune up but didn't solve the problem

The following are the general instructions on the start of diagnosing any electronically controlled engine or transmission problem.

The engine and the automatic transmission (transmission control is only for automatics, engine is still computer controlled no matter the transmission type) in this vehicle are computer controlled and in most cases when a fault occurs a fault code is stored in the memory of the computer control module. There are exception to this, such as the Mass Airflow Meter and fuel pressure problems. What must be done is to have all the basic testing done such as a scan of the system for fault codes as well as a check with a live data scanner tool for engine functions that are not within range of normal, a trained technician is required to know what is correct and what isn't, then based on careful diagnostics done from a factory repair manual the correct part is replaced or the wiring repaired or the computer replaced (known as the PCM), which is very rarely the problem. Other basic checks must be done as well such as mechanical problems with the engine as well as engine state of tune and mileage on the engine. The transmission can have mechanical issues as well such as no gear engagement at all or a failed pump or other pressure related problems. Also engine mechanical problems ca cause many drive-ability related problem such as rough idle and other symptoms

Have 2005 neon SXT automatic. The Transmission is not shifting smoothly, is shifting at higher rpms than normal. Has vibration when you put it in reverse.

I would suggest that you try servicing the transmission and having the fluids and filters replaced. Dodge is really good about having transmission issues related to partially plugged filters or stuck valve bodies.

2005 dodge neon codes p0731, p0700, p0573 and p0720

The codes listed all point to the transmission being in bad shape or some wiring got crossed. Check with a trans shop for an estimate.
