Hello, Is the car running better than it did before you replaced the fuel pump? I am just wondering what tests were done before the fuel pump was changed. There had to be a reason to think the old pump was bad.
There are several possibilities, one of the cheapest is to replace the fuel filter. If that does not help you should really test the fuel pressure anyway to adjust the pressure. There should be a fuel pressure Regulator inline and the test spout would be somewhere at the top of the fuelrail.
You may be able to borrow a pressure gauge at Autozone, Advance, or Oreilys as they have tool loaner programs. The Inertia sensor may trip on you and it would be good to bleed off the fuel pressure anyway when changing the fuel filter.
The fuel pump also has a Relay in the powerbox under the hood. It could be bad and overheat and kick out in a very short time. Then when the Relay cools down, the Relay could reset, giving you a small amount of fuel.
The fuel pressure Regulator and the fuel pump Relay are suppose to work in Harmony, in tandem and the Regulator acts as a buffer for the constant change in fuel demand. The fuel pump Relay could never make that many off/on cycles without failing.
If you have an Ohmmeter, you may want to check your TPS or Throttle Position Sensor. Disconnect the connector on the TPS and connect the Ohmmeter to the TPS side of the connection. With the gauge attached, move the throttle lever and see what Ohms change. There should be a smooth change both ways when the TPS operates. If jerky, replace the TPS.
i changed the fuel filter also. i will try to test the fuel pressure. when i first started the car i smelt a sweet smell from it. something other then antifreeze now when i start it i dont smell it anymore but the exhaust is very strong now
when i changed the fuel pump i didnt notice the fuse was blown it was bearly visible but it ran fine before except a lack of power every once in a while. but when i replace the fuel pump and filter and tried starting it. my battery was dead completley and then i discovered the fuse. i replace the fuse and then the car acted like above
Very strange. You have more than 1 problem. Fuel smell is from bad fuel. Also will take time for Catalytics to recover if they can. Blown fuse could have happened when disconnecting fuel pump with power on.
You need to check electrical for battery drain. The fuse should have broken the connection between the battery and the short and fuel pump should have shut down without power. That would mean you have another wire grounding that is probably not fused and is draining the battery. Or have the battery load checked too as it may have problems.
the batery was the origianal battery for the car when it was brand new. it was just due to go anyways 11 years i see why it died. but i still might have to look into that

Do you have a misfire too? Is the check engine light on? ANy DTC codes?
If you disconnect one plug wire at a time, do you have one that nmakes no change in idle quality? If yes, check plugs and plug wires and coil pack and the small wires going into the coil pack for corrsoion.
Do you do a carb or fuel injection and fuel tank full cycle cleaning?
Fouled injectors can sometimes deliver too
much fuel per pulse if deposit buildups cause them to stick open. In
either instance, the motor may hesitate or stumble while gas mileage,
emissions output, and performance suffer. Adjusting fuel pressure,
replacing various sensors, or swapping a clogged up catalytic converter
often addresses the symptom instead of the actual problem-the fuel
injectors. Unfortunately, rehabilitating ailing injectors is still
somewhat of a specialized trade that requires costly equipment, but do
the benefits outweigh the effort? Follow along as we take you through
the steps of testing and reconditioning a set of old squirters with ASNU
equipment at Westech Performance.
Out Of Gas
If
you've ever dropped a fuel tank or left a jug of gasoline sitting
around for a while, you've probably witnessed an amazing amount of junk
floating around. All that stands between it and your injectors is your
fuel filter, so think twice before deciding to run on fumes, which sucks
up the repugnant bottom-of-the-barrel garbage. Running on "E,"
especially in higher-mileage cars, is a good way to clog up your
squirters
Does this vehicle have a zetec engine or the american version ,two different animals here the europeon one and the american one .
zetec
right you changed the fuel pump ,so lift the back seat and remove the sender unit with the pump in and have a good look ,also the pump wiring connector as these do burn on the connections ,now did you just change the pump or the complete unit ,make sure that the gauze filter on the bottom isnt blocked ,if the tank looks mucky with deposits in the bottm then use the actual pupm hot wired to empty the tank the put your arm through the hole with tissue paper to clean it it out then some lint free rag like a old cotton shirt .Then filter the fuel back into the tank and try it again, these motors can and do suffer with bad connections on the plug socket to the pump but if you replaced the whole unit with a NEW one then should eliminate this problem but a junkey one from scrapyard is another matter .
