1992 side kick

Installed rebuilt engine and now ther is a ticking noise that developes with engine temp

    the noise is metalic and it is coming from flywheel or tourque converter. and there is no noise and no vibration when the engine is cold. after it reaches normal temp I here a metalic ticking and feel a vibration in the transmission. the car drives beter than ever and shifts smoother than before engine rebuild

Problem here is a ticking to one is a knock or a tap or a thud ect to others so of my experiance with engines if its a ticking that gets louder with the engine getting warmer its got to be the tappets its the only thing that would get louder if it gets louder when accelerating it could be ignition timming causes pinking most other things on engines that cause ticking sounds could be something catching fuel pumps cause a ticking noise but are not normally affected by engine temp yates210456

    ah its automatic how did you put the engine back in did you leave the tourqe converter in the gearbox housing or did you try to get the engine in with the toruqe converter attached to the flywheel as doing the last way is not the correct way of doing it but can be done but the risk of damage is ten fold when you try to get it in the converter has to be aligned with the front pump in the gearbox usually damages the pumps seals and the risk of damaging the flywheel is also possible as the flywheels are only made of thin steel if you did it the correct way its easier and damage it when putting engine in is almost impossible that said if the ticking noise if definatley coming from the bell housing which is where the flywheel and converter is the only thing it can be is the flywheel as the converter is basicly a container of oil and the flywheel do actually crack round the centre where the its bolted to the crankshaft was the flywheel bolts torqued to the correct setting as this is important the only way to find out what is going on is to take the box out and have a look at the centre of the flywheel carfully as these cracks don,t jump out at you as they spring back when the tension of the converter is released you could take the starter out and see if you can see any signs of scrapping in the bell housing but of what your saying if it wasn,t there before and it is now i fear the worse labour wise a long shot is does your engine and gearbox have a anti rattle plate that bolts between them if so i have known these to catch the flywheel best of luck yates210456

When you rebuilt the engine, did you replace the oil pump? Not replacing it a common mistake people make. If your have no pressure and it's pecking, don't continue driving it until the pump is replaced or you'll spin a rod bearing and ruin your crankshaft at the least, your block at worst. Good luck.

Ticking noise

Hi julbgz,

If either the torque converter or the oil pump was defective, you'll have a problem with the drive.....It wont pull correctly and eventually, you'll lose the drive....It's more likely to be something else.... As you recently had the engine out for a rebuild, make sure there's nothing stuck where it shouldn't be.... You may even find that the noise is coming from somewhere else altogether....That sometimes happens with vehicles.... Let me know what you find out....
