I am trying to replace the battery for a '97 Suzuki Sidekick. The battery terminals were so corroded, I had to cut the wire and put on some universal terminals. There are two wires for each terminal-

It may be that the horn I'm referring to in my question is actually the alarm. I was told by a mechanic that sometimes the alarm system might get reset after a new battery is installed. I am going to try and remove the alarm tonight to see if that works.

This happens in the shop all the time. It is not necessary to remove the alarm if you have the remote for the alarm. Simply hook the battery up and press the button to turn the alarm off.

Thank you, but I don't have the alarm remote. I bought the car from someone who didn't have it either. Any clues as to how to remove it are helpful! Thanks.

If it is an aftermarket remote there in nobody that can tell you anything over the internet without seeing the vehicle. There is absolutely now way to know how it was installed, where all the componets are located, etc. Most of the time with this aftermarket junk, there is a total rat's-nest up under the dash that nobody can figure out. your best bet would be to take it to a professional automotive service technician to have it removed and get the vehicle wiring harnesses restored to a condition that would be satisfactory to the people who built it.....You may have to spend a few bucks to make this happen, but it will be money well spent when it comes to preventing electrical system nightmares in the future.

    You are very welcome.

Also, if you do decide to get it done professionally, ASK QUESTIONS about how they go about making electrical repairs. I have seen many "professionals" produce wiring repairs that I would not trust to use on my flashlight! I have seen them use household wire nuts to splice wires (BIG-TIME NO-NO for automotive use). I have gone in behind so-called professionals and have had to remove huge balls of electrical tape to get in there so I could repair the splices that burned up because they did not do them correctly. I am EXTREMELY picky when it comes to wiring repairs - as I said earlier, if it would not be satisfactory to the people that built the car, then it is not good enough.

If you would like to get an idea of what I am saying, check out the web address below. This is a test preparation test for those people looking to become certified auto repair technicians. Take the test yourself and see how much you know! It will tell you which answers are correct and give you the reasons why. If nothing else, it will give you an idea of what to look for in a professional automotive repair technician.http://www.autoshop101.com/asetest/asete...

91 Suzuki Sidekick Starting Touble

nevr replace parts til u kno the issue--wiring does age in cars-it can gain resistence along with components-sounds like ther r bad or corroded connections too--u wud need a specialist in car harness work and individual models---u shud titen batt connects and inspect wher they attach to the starter--batt must read 12.6volts always-test it--alternator mite not be chargn--change the distributer cap-ther cheap--ignition coil may be worn--its most likely somethin simple--asian cars are bulletproof--a diagnostic scan is also helpful

Positive Battery Terminal Wire corroded off. Can I just replace the connector?

Hello,

If your positive battery terminal has corroded off, this is a easy fix if your wire is still over all in good shape. At places like Napa, Auto Zone, you can go in and purchase the terminal connector from them. Then you would have to cut back the wire a inch or so. ( past the point of the corrosion to good wire) strip the wire using a big wire stripper or a knife or even some wire cutters or razer knife. ( be real careful not to cut yourself) Strip the wire back and the connected gets put on normally with a couple nuts with bolts and washers. This is is a do it yourself easy project. Thanks Mike

Battery cable kroded car want start how can i get it to start

well for starters if the cable is corroded you will need to measure the cable and replace the cable, autozone has many options for you with cable replacements.

If in fact you battery terminals are corroded and they can easily be replaced on hondas i believe you just have to cut the cable right next to terminal and replace them with new ones this is also very simple and cheap (2.49 ) per terminal at autozone.

all you do to replace them is cut the old one off the new ones you will just bolt a metal plate over the wire

If its the battery post just go buy a battery cleaning brush cheap to and clean the post and the terminals and you will be ok. May i also suggest that you put felt washers and battery terminal grease to prevent re corrosion of the above items.

also clean the post terminals and it should start you just don't have a good electrical contact

Hey if it helps how about a 4 thumbs up thanks

My 95 suzuki sidekick was runing and just stoped it wont turn over any more the engain is not locked up when i jump started it, it has no spark could it be a neutral switch or a wirering problem

There is a fuse on the battery terminal. It seems that this particular fuse has blown. Please replace this fuse. This fuse is like a master switch. Cuts off all electricity circuits.

Fuseable link

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

In most Japanese brands, the fusible link is the short wire right after the battery that goes to a connector. Often, the battery + terminal has 2 wires; 1 very big that goes to the starter and another the feeds the fusebox. This 2nd wire from the + terminal is the fusible link.

Often fault with the fusible link is a corroded or burned connector/pin.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.
