We just replaced the fuel pump and they should of replaced the fuel filter as well. but after going on an 8 hour road trip on the way back our car started getting really bad gas milage. took about a half tank to go 90 miles. And its gotten even worse recently. do you have any suggestions on to what this could be

sounds like fuel pump pressure. I had the same thing happen to me in a Lincoln mark VII and the electrical connection was shorting out in the fuel pump. I changed the fuel pump..Returned under warranty) put the new one on with filter and had no problem with it.

Look at the terminals that the pump plugs into, they get corroded, make sure the wire hasnt corroded from the plug by gently tugging at it

Change the fuel filter first, it could just be a bad filter. Most of the time if the Fuel Pump go's bad the Engine will not run since there is not enough fuel pressure for the injectors to run.
A dirt fuel filter will still have fuel pressure but not the proper fuel rate. When you buy the Fuel filter at the parts store, like Auto Zone or Parts Source (they scan for free) if the truck can make it there, have it scanned for any DTC codes to see if there are any other problems that may be causing the problem like a bad Fuel pressure regulator or another sensors that may have gone bad making the truck do what it's doing.
The other thing to, Look for any corrosion at the Fuel Pump harness from the frame to the tank. See if there is any damage to the wire's and connection clips. But if your going to have to change the Fuel Pump, change the harness too. The extra $12.00 for the harness is cheaper then dropping the gas tank again just to change at 12 inch wire harness.
Good luck and hope this help. PS don't trash the old Fuel sending unit. You can always drill out the old Pump from the unit and replace it with a more reliable pump.
SOURCE: POOR GAS MILEAGE
Have you changed the fuel filter? I know it sounds weird but a plugged filter will make a truck use more gas. The computer tries to compensate for less fuel by commanding the injectors to open longer. Also a plugged filter will cause excess back pressure on the fuel pump making it loud.. Good Luck.

check the play in the distributor, and check that the fuel pressure is normal
